Im doing a report from school and i was wondering if anyone on this site could give me a list of some of the standard beliefs of southern baptists. Where the convention stands on issues such as: drinking, gambling, dancing, homosexuality, divorce, abortion, capital punishment, etc.

It's in the Baptist Faith and Message. Women are not to serve as pastors.

Contrary to Tomvols opinion, there is no official Southern Baptist position on these issues because each Southern Baptist is "FREE" even today to make their own decision/interpretation of each as God leads them. While Tom may need the boys in Nashville to square him away most of us do not.

    Your questions:
    My opinions:

Drinking: Most Baptists I know enjoy a cold one or a glass of wine with dinner.

Gambling: A five dollar nassau among friends a sin naaaah!

Dancing: Wife and I are doing it for the excersise, wish she thought it was a sin! [IMG]

Homosexuality: This is an issue which I do not touch because I am not one. So I will not cast a stone. I have other problems like not being able to keep my mouth shut when holier than thou preachers reference the BF&M2k for you answers.

Divorce: I struggle with that one. But I can say I dont know or its a mystery. I dont need BF&M2K to decide for me.

Abortion: Wrong, terrible etc. But...we live in a secular society so it should not be illegal.

Capital Punishment: Wrong terrible etc. Feels squirrely but (Hey Tom does the BF&M2K take care of this for him?)

Women in Ministry: If God calls them of course. That includes Pastors. A lot of people will tell you God doesnt call women because he is not the author of confusion etc. They will point you to neat little web sites with all the answers like Tom did. I encourage you to search the scripture, communicate with God and let him lead you in these areas. The greatest thing about being Baptist is being free, people will try to chain you because they are insecure in what they believe. Dont allow it, God is bigger and greater than all of us.

By the way the BF&M2000 is a sad sad excuse for a confession. Makes me ashamed to be a Southern Baptist among other things..... Sigh!!!

We do not believe in drinking. And it is taught against. Baut some do it, that I know personally only one couple drink a glass of wine with a meal a few times a year.

We do not believe in gambling, but some do it anyway. I believe this is the offical stance also, not sure.

The SBC have no stance that I know of on dancing.

    SBC does not support homosexuality.
When the BF&M was referenced it was in response to a question about beliefs, that is one source to go to to know what SB believe, (for the most part that is). It is not a lost of do's and don't that SB are bound by. It is a collection of what we already believe as SB.

You don't know, then you need help so you can know. Not much to decide when scripture teaches against it.
No SB do not believe in divorce.

Why not, murder is illegal in my state what about yours? Killing is killing, the age doesn't matter.
SB do not believe in or support abortion, and deny any right to kill an innocent child.

Don't know where the SBC stands offically

What I would point you to is scripture, which says a preacher/pastor is a man. But women also minister, just are not ordained, nor do they preach. Women have a place for service that they are specifically called for, but not in a mans place. By saying a womans called place of ministry is not good enough they need to be able to be ordained and pastor a church you belittle and demean what a woman is called by God to do. You say they need to be a man to of value, to take a mans place. The bible certainly does draw line between men and women, that is why the man is to head of the household, not that he is better, but it is his God given place. Same as a woman has a God given place.
Some churchs do it anyway, prefering man made laws called feminism then the word of God.

    Dietrich,
Someone asked for a place to find standard Baptist beliefs. I pointed one out to him so he could think for himself. Why do you have a problem with that? Don't know why you feel it necessary to issue juvenile insults. Really kind of pathetic.

Tom is correct about the BF&M being considered a good reflection of what most Southern Baptists believe. Dietrich is correct that there is no official S. Baptist doctrine. Also, remember, a majority does not equal correct doctrine. Of course it does not equal incorrect doctrine as well. More to come.

    </font>
This Southern Baptist has never, and will never drink "a cold one" or a glass of wine with dinner.

Gambling: A five dollar nassau among friends a sin naaaah!
I am personally opposed to gambling.

Dancing: Wife and I are doing it for the excersise, wish she thought it was a sin! [IMG]
No problems with dancing.

I think it is a sinful lifestyle. Not because of the BF&M2K, but because of what I believe the Bible says about it.

Divorce: I struggle with that one. But I can say I dont know or its a mystery. I dont need BF&M2K to decide for me.
I think divorce is not the ideal situation. But there are very RARE instances which I think it is warrented.

Abortion: Wrong, terrible etc. But...we live in a secular society so it should not be illegal.
Not only is it worng and terrible, but it is state sanctioned genocide and should not be legal. It is murder.

Capital Punishment: Wrong terrible etc. Feels squirrely but (Hey Tom does the BF&M2K take care of this for him?)
I go back and forth on this one. But mostly I think I am probably pro death penalty. God does forgive sins but does not always spare people the consequences. That is my opinion anyway.

Women in Ministry: If God calls them of course. That includes Pastors. A lot of people will tell you God doesnt call women because he is not the author of confusion etc. They will point you to neat little web sites with all the answers like Tom did. I have no problem with women in the ministry.

    S. Baptist are very diverse and you will find many different opinions about many different things. But I think we are all unified around the Blood atonement for sin and the ressurection of Christ and the Great Commission.

    Hope this helps,

Most SBC'ers I've met are pretty conservative. Guess others (like Deitrich) hang with a different bunch.

Do find it interesting that after Sunday School I see the parking lot of the neighboring SBC church loaded with folks smoking, while the independent Baptist (same doctrinal beliefs) it would be rare.

A lot has to do with culture. So my advice is to weigh carefully what each person contributes to this thread, and then understand that is just 1 vote out of 20,000,000 SBC'ers.

Tom you are correct sorry, I go a little blind over BF&M2K. Ecspecially as it is used more and more as the "line in the sand" for SBC.

My post was obnoxious towards you when my frustration is really with the document and the way current SBC leadership is using it.

    Please accept my apology.

Dr. Griffin has a point. There is such a wide array of opinion among our membership that it is hard to get an accurate pulse on our opinions. You may try this link to the Baptist Press which is the SBC newspaper and look at the state convention news as well as the national. Here also is the local associational newsletter of the Albemarle Association, my church's affiliate: The Crossbow .

You may also try another Virginia based publication called The Religious Herald .

    Hope this helps.
