Who or what do you think is responsible for rising gasoline prices?

Also what, if anything, should Congress do about it?

The #1 cause of the present rise in gas prices is not the lack of crude oil, but the lack of refinery capacity. There have been no new refineries built in California in the past 20 years. The older ones have been made more efficient, but they still lack the capacity.

Congress should do NOTHING! Just what we need! All the effeciency of the Post Office governing our energy supplies! Let the market place determine the price. Open more US oil fields for exploration and production, build more refineries, and let market forces take their course.

Thomas, I agree with your assessment of our wonderful gov't, and the need to open up our own oilfields. I have to question the refinery capacity, though. I'm told that there are refinery workers laid off in Philadelphia...plenty of oil, plenty of refinery capacity, it's just shut down.

I don't pretend to know exactly what's going on but I've been around enough to say for sure that the big boys are up to something.

I thank God I live in Hammond, IN, just near the refineries in East Chicago (also in Indiana). Today, I saw a couple of stations in the area with prices of $1.10 per gallon. No, this is not a misprint. In nearby Chicago, prices can be up to 50-cents more per gallon. I thank God He has blessed this area.

How about $2.09, $1.99 and $1.89 in NYC?

Anybody got any idea how they price gas?

I left Rockford IL last Thrusday morning, filled my tank for $1.09/gal. Drove to Bloomington IL and gas was the same price. Since I still had a half tank I figured I would wait til I got back to Rockford to fill up again. Pulled into Rockford about 5 hours after I left and gas was now $1.38/gal.

How did that happen.

To continue the price saga. After my trip prices dropped again. They got down to about 1.24, then just yesterday they jumped to 1.45. Where will it end.

Tuesday morning I left for the airport at 5 AM to fly to MPLS. On the way I stopped to fill the car with gas, and paid $2.09/gallon. When I left MPLS this morning at 5AM, I stopped and filled the rental car with gas and paid $1.19. I should have stayed in MPLS! [IMG]

Out here in Wyoming we never went about $1.56 a gallon, but it is S-L-O-W in coming down. Just passed a Sinclair station on my way home at $1.24.

Did I mention that the largest Sinclair refinery is on the other side of Casper? They have to transport the gas 3 miles to this station, while it goes 1400 miles in pipelines to Illinois where it sells for less.

    Grrrrr.

I used to live near Wood River IL where there is a Shell, a Amacco, a Marathon, and a Clark refinery. Gas has always been more expensive around there than alot of other places. I could never figure it out since they didn't have to transport it. Guess its the same in WY.

Gas is about $1.33/gallon (lowest grade) right now out here in Southeastern Ohio. It was up to $1.85 (ouch!) for a while in May/June! It went down to about $1.15 and is now back up to $1.33 and seems to be climbing!
