Gen 6 R.C.Sproul and Women vs Angels

In Yesterday's "Renewing your mind" radio program by R.C.Sproul he went through a topic about Angels and women that is also covered in his book "Now that is a good question".

R.C showed that Genesis 6 is NOT a pagan myth about Angels mating with humans and argued the case that sinless angels are NOT tempted at all "by women".

I would add that Christ points out in Matt 22 that Angels do not even HAVE THE FUNCTION of marriage or family or reproduction with their OWN species let alone OTHER species!!

R.C made the case that the "sons of God" is defined as the faithful descenants of SETH and the "sons of men" defined as the wicked descenants of CAIN. The result is that the ENTIRE population of earth becomes wicked for "the salt of the earth is gone".

We see the same thing happen in Israel when they mix with pagan nations around them and then God sends nations to destroy them.

While the assessment you have pointed out is correct, you will find some on the BB who believe that angels and women were "breeding". I remember because we talked about this a good while back.

I personally believe that this passage points out the danger of believers marrying non-believers. Right after this happened the world began to become more and more wicked until it was destroyed by flood. The world paid a great price by the Godly and the ungodly intermarrying.

It appears as if the Godly people of Seth who were intermarrying with the ungodly people of Cain weren't strong enough to change their spouses and instead of righteousness penetrating the ungodly people, unrighteousness penetrated the Godly people.

Scripture is always the best way to interpret other scripture and I thought of a few passages that accompany this believer/non-believer interpretation and the great price that will be paid.

• Deuteronomy 17:17 - God said that future kings shouldn't make multiple marriages because their would turn the king's heart. Sure enough, the wisest man in the world, King Solomon did that very thing....he married several hundred women as signs/seals of political treaties with other nations and these women brought foreign idolatry into his home and his heart was turned and he paid a great price.

• 1 Corinthians 7:15 - Paul said that if a believer is married to an unbeliever and the unbeliever wants a divorce, that the believer can let them go because the believer is not under bondage. Divorce is ugly and those who have suffered through it know the great price that is paid. Especially the children.

• 2 Corinthians 6:14 - Paul said to not be unequally yoked with unbelievers....that what on earth does righteousness have to do with unrighteousness?

• Matthew 7:6 - Jesus said not to give that which is holy to dogs or cast our pearls before swine. Most assuredly, He is not talking about sharing the gospel with the lost or tending to the needs of the hopeless, but about rolling around in the mud with the pigs while doing so. It only makes the pig mad and makes you filthy. Jesus warned that that pigs will trample the "pearls" under their feet and turn against you and harm you. It appears there is a fine line where, once crossed, the Christian is in peril of losing his testimony or becomes ineffective.

Trying to mix what is Godly with what is ungodly is very, very costly. And it is typically the Godly that pays the price.

You are correct. However even in those extreme cases where people had the totally wrong idea about Gen 6 -- they belonged to no church group that held that as a "doctrinal position" so in theory they should have been able to "see the light" on this and turn to a biblically sound (superstition avoiding) position.

Why is it so hard for people to change their views on something or fall on their sword over just plan bad theology?

This should be "the easy one" for everyone!!

How very true. The salt of the earth ended when the family unit of the saints was destroyed by mixed-marriage compromises with the world.

So the "World ended"!

It's tradition of man that has been accepted as Scripture. Those things abound, and those that reject them are called "heretics" by some and "learned" by others.

In the NT the Christians were called "A SECT of Judaism" and in fact they were for all the Apostles were Jews and the Acts 15 Jerusalem council was deciding matters for the entire Christian world.

The Jews were confronted by many pagan religious systems throughout the Greek and Roman world but it is specifically the CHRISTIANs that they target for they appear to be a SECT that reads the SAME Bible, worships the SAME God (attends the SAME services in Acts 13 and Acts 17) etc.

In Matt 4 Christ stands up to read in the synagogue of the ONE TRUE CHURCH and Paul himself is asked to speak by the Jews when he goes visiting.

So you are right that these men are then called heretics and leaders of a rogue sect etc. But simply ranting and railing against them with empty pejorative terms did not make any dent at all in their doctrinal position.

The Jews could easily invent trite little games charging Paul with "Keyholing" the the scriptures highlighting inconvenient texts that point to Christ as the Messiah.

Do that as they may - it COULD NOT stop the Christian movement.

However in the case of THIS thread -- the topic does not cross any doctrinal boundaries so no one "should be" falling on their swords trying to rail against R.C Sproul's clear presentation explaining the fact that Genesis 6 is a story about mixed marriages between the people of Seth and the people of Cain.

And what about the GIANTS?? notice that there are only TWO options.

#1. Giants were the result of Godly men entering into marriage union with ungodly women.
#2. Giants is a statement about the ability of a long lived race that went rapidly into violence and had such "ability" that God had to call for it's extinction.

Since we know that among SOME of the people after the flood the Nephilim GIANTS still existed and that Goliath was one of them - IF we take option 1 above then NOAH or his sons were ALSO among the wicked who got involved in mixed marriages.

IF we take option TWO then Noah AND his sons were RIGHTEOUS but were GIANTS as were all those in the long lived race before the flood. In that case the trait was slowly dying out in successive generations with some tribes clinging to the physical traits longer than others -- so that Goliath is among those who are GIANTS but David is not.
