well ole Dr Gene Scott died today yesterday (read the article: HERE! )

Just thought I give a passing mention. I don't like Dr. Scott's theology nor his views of Christianity. But you can't deny that he was a character and a half.

    Check out his site: HERE!

basically Dr. Gene Scott was a genius of tremendous caliber. He had a PhD from Stanford and could read and write nearly a dozen langauges. His style on television was often seen sitting in an overstuffed chair, smoking a large cigar, and drinking a glass of brandy while talking at length (and mostly without notes) about the Bible and background issues. While his personal theological disposition was troubling at times (well let's be honest, he's pretty close to being a heretic) one cannot deny that he gave tremendously to causes both Christian and not.

While we disdain the use of the word "heretic" here on the BB, it seems the only word that could adequately describe his theology.

Would not want to see the results of a poll on whether folks think Gene is in heaven or hell today. His view of Jesus and salvaiton was so rank, I could not listen to his inane ramblings.

Dag nab it. Gene Scott died.

He was one man who I cracked up every time I watched. I couldn't believe he was ever on the air.

I couldn't watch it ... the women were always too scantily clad ...

His theology was never as good as his intellect ...

Back when I was an insomniac and had C-band, I passed the time watching Dr. Scott. He was a HOOT!
Enjoyed his discussions on English Israelites and the significance of measurements in the pyramids. What blew my patience, however, were those long home camera road scenes. Beingan ex cigar smoker, I must confess that I could almost smell the aroma of his cigar. [IMG]

I saw that guy a few times years ago, just to get an angle of what his longgg TV presentation was about, and my impression was that he believes nothing about God or anything about 'TV evangelism.' He appeared to be there just to mock the idea of televangelism, as if he got the idea from Fernwood Tonight, that bogus talk show in the 70's. His name even sounds as if selected for an actor, combining Gene Hackman and George C. Scott in the wily, headstrong preacher in The Poseidon Adventure with Gen. Patton. Regardless, I don't think anyone is worse off with him gone.

    I loved his golf cap.

The FCC tried to take him off the air once and he asked them for an interview and they wouldn't show up so he sat around chairs and put watermelons in them and said they were just as smart as the FCC employees and he interviewed them. One fell on the floor and broke and he ask him if that was the best he could do, split apart on the floor. His station was fined another $20,000 the next week.

Remember when he would play the same song that was recorded over and over and over and ask for money? He'd say a tube was going out on his transmitter and if he didn't get it he would go off the air then he'd run his song again.

What got me was he had no problem cussing on his show either.

An interesting bio on old Gene can be found here:

I might add that in the event that somehow he was a Christian (given Rom. 8:14), his time at the Judgement Seat had to be the most interesting in the history of Christianity.

I listened to him a couple of times ... it was almost as if there were 2 of him (maybe 3 or 4).

Twice he seemed normal. Once or twice more, he seemed WAY out there.

I just couldn't handle the women ... It was degrading and too often they did not have much on.

I prefer old fashioned over new fashioned ...

I used to get so mad at him, Gayla! The man was an absolute ridicule of Christianity and pastors everywhere.

I used to be somewhat alarmed by the fact that he would be preaching and in the middle of his teaching he'd say "Now get on the phones", which was his way of saying, if you don't send me money right now I'll quit preaching. Sadly his suckers, err, I mean followers, would reach out for their credit cards.

Nothing like charching by the minute for the Great Commission. I of course have a more novel idea. Why not pull out a Bible and let the Holy Spirit teach you for free? And He's much more patient too.

    Priceless
    [IMG] [/QB][/QUOTE]

Best teaching on faith I ever heard

Best teaching on the resurrection I ever heard

Best teaching on Gideon I ever heard

Best teaching on Jeptha I ever heard

Best teaching on Jesus confrontations with
    the Pharisees I ever heard.

The good pastor/teacher and his gift used
outlandish tactics to seperate the wheat from
the chaff...he really wanted to reach the
types that Jesus sat down with outside the
halls of religion...I think by faith he did that.

    imho
    sincerely

Outrageous and bizzare, but I liked one thing in particular that he used to say...

"You don't have to park your brain at the door when you go to church".
