In a recent Sunday school class, I taught on Genesis 3:16. I'd like to know how the brethren/sistren here have handled the last part of the verse:

"Yet your desire will be for your husband, And (2) he will rule over you."

I know where my study went on this one but I'd like to hear your thoughts before tipping my hand. [IMG]

Could it be that God is telling wives who would like to rule their husbands that it will be the husbands ruling their wives?

I Cor. 11:3. But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.

Rufus is right. Part of the curse would be that the woman would no longer submit to the place God intended for her but would instead try to rule her husband. However, he would rule over her. The exact same wording in used in 4:6 where sin desires to have mastery over Cain but he must master it.

This is often wrongly interpreted to say that as a result of the curse the woman would desire her husband in a good way. Yet that cannot be reconciled with the fact that this is a part fo teh curse. The curse did not make things better; it made them worse. It alone is responsible for the problems in marriage and the devaluation of women to the place where they are today.

I agree with Pastor Larry in the interpretation of this scripture, but personally, I think that a study of this scripture should include that

Jesus raised the window for women and elevated their status. See Galations 3:28: ".....there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus"

I do believe that the man is head of the household and wives are to be submissive to their husbands, but I do not think this "devalues" a woman today. I think this is her role.

I do not wish to start a debate. I just think that this should be included in any discussion about men and women that we are all one in Christ Jesus.

I think you are misunderstanding me. The devaluation of women has to do with the fact that women want to stoop to the level of a man. They have devalued their own God-given role and value by trying to be like men in everything. God created women and men differently for a reason. When the women try to become like a man, as they are trying to do today, they are giving up the state that God created them in.

I am not telling you you are not important. I am telling you are important, far too important to try to beceom like a man.

I don't think submission devalues a woman at all. I agree with you on that.

BTW, the "one in Christ JEsus" does not deal with roles or functions; it deals with our standing in Christ.

You are correct I did misunderstand your meaning.

Thank you for explaining it to me. My husband said that was what you meant after he read your post and mine.

As women, we have felt put down so much that we do not recognize when someone may be speaking highly of us. I, for one, never wanted to be treated like a man because I think men have too much responsibility. [IMG]

I am very comfortable with the role that I have been given and strive to do God's Will.

Awoman is to submit to her husband as men are to submit to Christ. In that context Christ lovingly lifts us up out of our humility to an elevated position. This is the proper way it is to be between a man and his wife. She humbly submits to him and he LOVINGLY lifts her up. If it is otherwise then the family is out of balance and will likely carreen to destruction.

And Christianity is the only major religion that elevates the position of the woman to equal standing "spiritually" with the man.

Try that in Mormonism. Or Islam.

"In Christ there is no male or female, no bond or free, no Jew or gentile" . . . for the ground at the foot of the cross is level.
