George Campbell Morgan (1863-1945) is largely forgotten now, but for many years he was a very famous preacher. Born in England, he spent time preaching in America and was associated with D.L. Moody. In 1904, he rreturned to Britain and became the minister at Westminster Chapel in the heart of London, close to Buckingham Palace. The chapel is a pretty huge building, but it had fallen on hard times and there were moves to close it and sell it off. However, Campbell Morgan's preaching was so effective that the congregation grew tremendously until the start of WW1.
Campbell Morgan left the Chapel in 1917 and returned to the USA, but in 1933, he returned, and was as successful as before. I should say at this point that he was a a genuine evangelical at a time when many pulpits in Britain were becoming liberal - and an Arminian.

Around 1936, Campbell Morgan became conscious of advancing years and realised that he needed an Associate Minister. He also came to the conclusion that the man he neeeded to ensure the continuation of Bible-based ministry at the Chapel was Martyn Lloyd-Jones, at that time minister of a chapel in a working-class area of South Wales. Loyd-Jones was a Calvinist, but this did not deter C.M. who pursued him relentlessly until he agreed to come to London, first in a temporary capacity, and then, in 1939, just as WW2 broke out, as full-time Associate Minister. The two men shared the ministry until C.M.'s retirement in 1943. C.M. wrote to his family, "I am greatly comforted by my colleague.....He is a remarkable preacher and a delightful personality.." And again, "I cannot tell you with what pleasure I listen to him..... It is mighty preaching, most appropriate for these days." Lloyd-Jones was equally complimentary about Campbell Morgan, taking his memorial service at the Chapel in 1945. "We differed theologically, but we never discussed that; we believed in the final authority of this Book. If one of us was a little bit Calvinistic in his preaching, the other was always Calvinistic in his praying!" He wrote that the only real difference in their preaching was that C.M. would tell people that Christ died for them, and Ll-J. would tell them that He died for sinners just like them.

I have given this short history because I am becoming more and more depressed reading the thrreads on this board. This is a discussion forum and it is right that Arminianism and Calvinism should be discussed, but surely we should treat each other with respect as children of God, and refrain from personal abuse and show respect for each other's positions. We shall have to get on in heaven so we should try to make a start now. Inasmuch as I have been guilty of these things, I regret them and repent of them.

I have spent some time listening to Martyn Lloyd Jones as well as Eric Alexander. While I do truly enjoy their sermons, I also am eternally grateful for the 2x speed while listening. At 2x speed they almost sound American. :Cool

I have G. Campbell Morgan's book "The Gospel According to Matthew" and it is a good one. It's good to hear him mentioned as I didn't think anybody gave him any thought these days.
