Often, Talk show host Glenn Beck will mention that it is ridiculous that every kid in a youth sports league receives a trophy, just for "being on the team", whether the kid was the league MVP or just a kid who made it to only 2 or 3 games during the season.

When I was a coach for T-Ball (ages 5-8), way last century, I gave every kid a certificate on my team. But each certificate was an award for the strength of the young player. Of course, I had the typical MVP, most improved player, ect. But then I came up with enough categories so each player had a certificate - but none were duplicated.

So do you agree in principal with Glenn, or do you think that every kid should get a trophy, so we don't hurt his feelings?

Do you agree how I handled certificates with my ball team?

    thoughts?

IMHO give either none or everyone one. Why not just let the kids play for fun? Whatever happened to letting kids be kids and play for fun?

Should we also remove class valedictorians?

In life there are winners and losers. It's the liberal mindset of people like you that has turned this country into a bunch of whiny, pathetic, under-achieving losers looking for handouts.

Totally different subject. To equate academics with playing a game does not add up. There will be enough competition in life later. Why not just let the kids have fun. Maybe you are too young to have been fun of playing just for fun and no pressure to win, no pressure from parents, no pressure from coaches. Just plain fun. Actually I am the conservative here, I want it to be the way it used to be. I want to bring back the America where kids can be kids. Do not impose adult values n them while they are so young. I feel sorry for kids now. They are not allowed to be kids. Would you call the veterans of WW II wimps, pathetic. They were allowed to be kids when the were growing up.

This quote sounds like a whine to me.

I do not agree that every kid should get a trophy. Not only does it devalue the accomplishment, it also teaches the other kids that they are ENTITLED to get a reward whether they accomplished something or not.

Imagine the youngster's surprise when he grows up and his co-worker gets a raise and he doesn't. Boo hoo! Not fair! The boss should give him a raise, too, because his feelings are hurt.

I agree with how you handled your team.

It's true that there are winners and losers in life, but it's also sad that everything is turned into winner/loser so that everyone wants something bigger and better and sees themselves as losers if they don't have it.

That's a silly mindset and part of why you have millions of Americans walking around disgruntled and looking like their favorite purebred puppy that was better than the other puppies just died.

Plus there's a LOT of kids out there that are just average. Try as they might, they aren't gonna be the best at anything they try. However, it certainly isn't stupid or liberal-minded to encourage them in what they do in life and recognize that their contributions are valuable. Why is that liberal? If anything, that is getting right down to the core of understanding the value of human life, isn't it? Why do people go out of their way to cheer on the weak or the strong, but don't give a hoot about the rest?

There are places for recognizing talent and being the best.
It doesn't have to be in everything though.

It really depends on what ages we are talking about.

With organized sports like soccer and T-ball for young children they are just starting to learn about sportsmanship and how to play as a team. It really should just be about having fun and beginning athletics. I think at that level it is a good idea for each child to receive a trophy for his participation for that season.

Since they don't even keep score at those levels I don't know how anyone would try and determine who should deserve the "accomplishment" or who is the "winners or losers". Children just want to have fun, we adults should sometime get out of the way and let them. I think at that age part of that fun is a party and trophy's to end the season.

When children get older and have to make teams rosters or earn spots as starters then it becomes a different story. Once teams start keeping scores, and winning championships then it is appropriate to acknowledge individuals that displayed extra efforts or successes that helped their team.

When I coached T-Ball, we did keep score, however the rules, for our league stated that each player would have one at bat per inning, but only the runs scored by the first 9 players would count. Therefore:
    1. in order for the ninth player to score a counted run, he would have to hit a home run.
    2. After the ninth player AB was over, coaches would put in the 2nd string; so even if a run scored it did not count.

In the second inning, the lineup would be go from the bottom to the top.
Another words, if 12 players showed up for the game; in the first inning, players 1-9 would have an official "run scored" if so accomplished. In the second inning, players 12-4 would have an official "run scored" is so accomplished. Which means you would put your best players in position 4-9, as they could score in both innings. If the game went to a third inning (there was a one hour time limit) we would go back to the top of the inning.

I think it is good to keep score, as a poster previously stated that we need to teach kids, there are winners and losers.

Likewise, in a way I agree with Crabtownboy, I do want the kids to have fun. The league only lasted for 6 weeks, so their was plenty of time to have just plain fun after the season was over.

Absolutely. It's t-Ball for goodness sakes. You identified each child's strength and rewarded him for that. Not all kids will be the MVP. However, on a team, all of the kids can make a contribution -- even if it's the "Most Enthusiastic" or "Best Teammate." A little bit of encouragement for kids can go a long way.

On the team my son played on----there were no individual trophies---which was no big deal

BUT---the league had "ALL STARS" teams combining selected individuals from each team to play

I've seen grown men and women throw "Hissy Fits" when their son was not selected to play "ALL STARS"

Then again on the other hand---I've seen team coaches whos sons played on "ALL STARS" who were terrible team players

We'd be better off as parents if we would just let our kids be kids---what do I mean by that?? Instead of forming leagues like we think we need to have---just let the kids run free in the neighborhood-----whatever happened to backyard baseball/football/soccer/basketball----I remember those games---no parents involved---just us kids--we'd pick teams---one team would be "SHIRTS"---the other team would be "SKINS"

Then we'd start the game---"Two hand touch anywhere" wound up being "Tackle" when we would start "assuming" various roles like "I'm Dick Butkis!" "I'm Jack Lambert!" "I'm Fran Tarkinton!"

We'd "Draw Blood" sometimes---playing baseball, football, basketball, soccer---and I suppose we'd even draw blood when it was raining outside and we'd be stuck under the carport playing Chess!!!!!!!!

When a fight broke out---there were no parents involved---and we'd have to break our own selves up---but we wouldn't go home cryin'---when the fight broke up we'd resume play!!

Those kind of games don't exist anymore---instead---mommas buy Esculades and Avalanches to escort their sissy kid to some sissy playin' field and "He better get to play!" and "He better make All Stars!" and "He better get a trophy!"
