    I agree, Alan.
It was not John Calvin who first taught that we as men are completely and spiritually dead towards God in the depths of our trespasses and sins, it was the Lord:

    " And you [hath he quickened], who were dead in trespasses and sins;
2 wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
3 among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
5 even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved )
6 and hath raised [us] up together, and made [us] sit together in heavenly [places] in Christ Jesus:
7 that in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in [his] kindness toward us through Christ Jesus."
    ( Ephesians 2:1-7 ).

We as believers were made alive in Christ...
    Raised from the dead, spiritually.

This is what it is to be spiritually dead:

" This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
18 having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
19 who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. "
    ( Ephesians 4:17-19 ).

Vain, having a darkened understanding of God, being alienated from the life of God through our ignorance and because of the blindness of our hearts.
Finally, here we see those who are not in Christ and what their attitude towards Jesus Christ truly is:

" He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God."
    ( John 3:18-21 ).

They hate the Lord, and refuse to come to Him.
In addition, those that do truth come to the Light ( Jesus Christ, the Light of the world )...

To show that their deeds were worked in God, not themselves.:)

    In
    The Total Depravity of Man
    by A. W. Pink

Brother Pink says, "Until we really behold the horror of the pit in which by nature we lie, we can never properly appreciate Christ's so-great salvation.

"In man's fallen condition we have the awful disease for which divine redemption is the only cure, and our estimation and valuation of the provisions of divine grace will necessarily be modified in proportion as we modify the need it was meant to meet.

"David Clarkson, one of the Puritans, pointed out this fact in his sermon on Psalm 51:5:

"The end of the ministry of the Gospel is to bring sinners unto Christ.

"Their way to this end lies through the sense of their misery without Christ.

"The ingredients of this misery are our sinfulness, original and actual; the wrath of God, whereto sin has exposed us; and our impotency to free ourselves either from sin or wrath.

"That we may, therefore, promote this great end, we shall endeavor, as the Lord will assist, to lead you in this way, by the sense of misery, to Him who alone can deliver from it.

"Now the original of our misery being the corruption of our nature or original sin, we thought fit to begin here, and therefore have pitched upon these words as very proper for our purpose:

"Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me."

    Clemens Romanus. A.D. 69.

Clemens was so far from ascribing vocation, conversion, or
sanctification, to the will of man, that he always considers it as the
effect and produce of the will of God.

His epistle to the Corinthians begins thus, “The church of God which dwells at
Rome, to the church of God which dwells at Corinth, kletois
    egiasmenois en thelemati Theou,

‘to the called and sanctified by
the will of God,’ through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

He denies that men are called and justified, and come to honor, glory, and
greatness, by themselves, or by their own works,

but by the will and grace of God; for thus he expresses himself, “All therefore
    are glorified and magnified,

ou di eauton, e ton ergon auton, e tes
dikaiopragias, es katargeisantoi, alla dia ton thelematos auton,

not by themselves or their own works of righteous actions, which
they have wrought out, but by his will;” and we also being called
by his will in Christ Jesus are justified,

ou di eauton, ou de dia tes
emeteras sophias, e suneseos, e eusebeias, e ergon, on
    kateirgasametha, en osioteti kardias,

    “‘not by ourselves, nor by
our wisdom, or understanding, or piety, or the works which we
have done in holiness of heart,’ but by faith by which God
Almighty hath justified all from the beginning, to whom be glory for
    ever and ever. Amen.”
