I want to preface this before I say anymore! I do Not believe what happened in New Orleans was a result of God's judgement.

I have heard both Christians and non-Christians say that it was God's judgement on New Orleans because of "all the sin there".

I've looked in the Bible-here is what I've found.
Genesis 6:7, And the Lord said, I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky; for I'am sorry that I have made them. NASB

Genesis 9:15, And I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and never again shall the water become a flood to destroy all flesh. NASB

In Genesis 6:7 He said He would blot out man, animals, creeping things and birds of the sky.

Not all was blotted out, there are survivors-man, animals, creeping things and birds.

In Genesis 9:15 He remembered His covenant He did
Not bring a flood to destroy all flesh.

    God will be God.

Judgement for some. Test for others.

If we look at the results of the Flood, we can see what was accomplished. Men's lifespans dropped by about half immediately. There was no longer the time to become as evil in one's lifetime. God had told Noah that He would not strive with man forever but that man's days would be 120 years. That is a drastic drop from antediluvian times. Today those who choose evil do not have much time to practice their evil before death. Those who choose Christ have enough time to choose and then to witness. Then it's over here on earth.

We don't see evil wiped out with the Flood. We see the opportunities for any one person to become more and more evil become very limited in comparison to life before the Flood, however.

I don't see it as God's judgement---I see this, though!!

    1) A naturally occuring hurricane that "brewed up" off the coast of Africa---got caught up in the Atlantic "Trade Winds" that veered it to the west---crossed the Atlantic---skirted the southern tip of Florida---made its way into the Gulf----intensified due to natural warmth of Gulf water and atmospheric moisture!! Just something natural that has happened looooooong before man began to keep record of it happening!

2)An elaborate set of man made levee systems built so as to stop flood waters from fillin' "The Bowl" of New Orleans---that according to engineering plans would squelch a Catagory 3 "to its face"---but same same levee collapsed like a house of Cards in an extreme high Catagory 4 storm and surge and rain and etc.

People build houses and watch football games in "The Bowl" built 10 feet below sea level in New Orleans much the same way that people build houses and watch football games at several fault lines along the California coast---if they choose to build on a fault or in a fish bowl---they understand the risks involved---or at least they should----makes for some mighty fancy numbers for insurance writers to juggle, doesn't it!!!----Insurance writers near about have to be on drugs(figure of speech here guys) to even print up a hefty little "rider"---much less something that will cover like a blanket!!!!

"And I will remember my covenant, which [is] between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh."

Note I bolded ALL! The waters did not flood the world, so that is not all. God will do what he wants to, when he wants to..that is a sin city and it needed a good washing. I feel sorry for the poor people and animals that lost their lives, but if they followed God and done what's right, they don't know what has happened. The suffering is gone, folks! Life goes on.. and Life is Life! Sin is Sin!

Genesis 6:7"And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them."

He sure enough did, didn't he?

Not bring a flood to destroy all flesh.

Right~ and he didn't. He did what HE wanted to!

The French Quarter was relatively untouched by the hurricane and the flood that followed. If it was God's judgement, I would think He would have utterly destroyed the most sinful portion of New Orleans.

Blackbird, there's no doubt in my mind that God could hit a single blade of grass if he wanted .I,ll go with #2,but it still could have been God's judgement? Am I right or is there something in the bible to say otherwise.

maybe He left the parts that need to be evangelised and hit the parts that were not doing the evangilizing. That is still judgement and it is still a test. Why can't it be both with the one needing which ever shoe, wear it.

It is my understanding that the wages of sin is death, not the destruction of property. A very small percentage lost their lives so it would seem to be a very inefficient judgement of lost lives. I also thought there is generally a warning specific to the area effected. The only reason we know that God judged some of the places in biblical times is that He told us so in the Bible. I am sure that during this time there were hurricanes, tornados, and earthquakes in various places which were not described as judgements on particular people and as a result we have no idea whether or not they were. The same is true now, we just don't know because He didn't tell us.

buckstar---go back up to my links in my previous post and I ask you-----which of these two groups were doing the least amount of evangelizing---two of the greatest evangelical tools in the Greater New Orleans area---NOBTS under Chuck Kelley and Franklin Avenue Baptist Church pastored by Fred Luter---no evanelizing going on here??????? There's a good Greek word for that---B-O-L-O-G-N-A!!!!

Hey Blackbird, I agree with you 100%. The hurricane was result of meterological events. God did NOT do it, He sure gets blamed for a lot of things even mans stupidity. There is another hurricane out in the Atlantic right now or least there was the last time I caught the news. Tis the season for hurricanes just like there is for tornados.

In times of calamity such as the hurricane It is helpful to remember our Lord's word in Luke 13:1-5. Except ye repent ye shall likewise perish . According to that we should take these things as warnings, not a judgement. God's judgement on poeple in this life is rare; it is reserved for the Judgement Day.

Its called by Jesus "The Time of Jacob's Trouble"----in which Jesus goes on to say that unless those days are shortened not a single person will be left to give living testamony of it!!

Then there is the proverb found in the book of Jeremiah that goes like

If the footmen hath wearied thee---how shalt thou content against the horsemen?? IOW---a little wind over New Olreans and Gulf Coast we cannot handle---how will they handle world wide simutanious catastrohy???

Turn away from Jacob's Trouble coming!!!

My goodness! Nature isn't controlled by man, people! Hello?! God will do what he wants to do. I am not God and neither are you so our opinions reach the same side of the finish line.

Pappy---the book of Ecclesiastes tells us that there are certain laws that govern weather patterns that are set by God---so what you say is true in a sense--nature is controlled by God---I agree there

I'm just curious though---many people see Katrina as a "judgment" sent by God---as if God were riding Katrina's back and was steering the hurricane like a rider would rein his horse----but yet---when Hurricane season passes---and it starts gettin' "bugger cold" and an ice storm hits Chicago and the heat goes out---and several hundred freeze to death----folks don't see that as a judgement----but as cold air coming from the North Pole--that dips deep across those Great Lakes makeing it colder than usual!!!

    See what I'm saying???
