Gone With The Wind

Gone with the Wind has been taken off HBO Max following calls for it to be removed from the US streaming service.

HBO Max said the 1939 film was "a product of its time" and depicted "ethnic and racial prejudices" that "were wrong then and are wrong today".

It said the film would return to the platform at an unspecified date with a "discussion of its historical context".

Set during and after the American Civil War, Gone with the Wind has long been attacked for its depiction of slavery.

Based on the novel by Margaret Mitchell, it features slave characters who seem contented with their lot and who remain loyal to their former owners after slavery's abolition.

Gone with the Wind received 10 Oscars and remains the highest-grossing movie of all time when its takings are adjusted for inflation.

Hattie McDaniel became the first black actress to be nominated for, and win, an Academy Award for her role as domestic servant Mammy.

Writing in the Los Angeles Times this week, screenwriter John Ridley said the film "glorifies the antebellum south" and perpetuated "painful stereotypes of people of colour".

"The movie had the very best talents in Hollywood at that time working together to sentimentalise a history that never was," continued the Oscar-winning screenwriter of 12 Years A Slave.

You can still watch Gone With the Wind. They just don’t want it on their platform. Stop being dramatic.

What the extreme far left is doing is reminiscent of book burnings

Let no one harbor any doubt anymore, Communist-style purges and denunciations have now come to America. We better react and end this kind of crap or the nation is gone - it looks like we are 70% at that point now. We even have General Petreus calling for the renaming of Army installations that have been named after Confederate military leaders.

Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of the Republic.

Frankly, my dear, I don't.....

I was wondering when it'd get the movie (the book was banned already in several schools). Literature suffered early on (no more Joseph Conrad, Mark Twain, Flannery O'Connor). On the other side, Invisible Man was also banned by a few schools.

One media company decides to drop a movie from their regular rotation and will return it at a later day and that is equated to "book burning" by the "extremist left" and "communist-style purges."

Stereotypical depictions of slavery and white privilege is temporarily being taken off of 1 of over 450 channels. Oh no!

I wonder how much longer I can withstand this place...

How long will "later" be. And why now? Are they trying to be PC during this time
of honoring a man who is a multi-convicted felon?

Sigh, why must basic things be explained to you constantly?

"Gone with the Wind has been taken off HBO Max following calls for it to be removed from the US streaming service."

It shouldnt be taken off at all. At least not for the false reasons it is being.

If you cannot take the views of other people then you know where the door is. If you have not learned by now that there will be views on this board you do not agree with then no amount of explaining it will help you.

Since HBO has purchased the rights to air the movie they can do whatever they want to do with it and don't have to give you a reason. Doing so following customer feedback seems like a smart practice for a capitalistic entity to follow. You know--give your customers what they want?! Why must basic things be explained to you constantly?

Look in the mirror and repeat what you just said to me but to yourself.

Where did you hear this? The reports I heard was that they just did it unilaterally. Just another corporation submitting to the mob. Where will all this end?

It does equate to book burnings. Unless he sold it, the great liberal Ted Turner owns Gone With The Wind.

The very first sentence of the OP.

"Gone with the Wind has been taken off HBO Max following calls for it to be removed from the US streaming service."

I presume there are HBO customers in your so-called "mob". Anyway, I assume there were customers, whereas you assume they were any angry mob with torches and pitchforks. I guess that is a fundamental difference in our worldview. I like mine better, BTW.

You beat me to it.

Actually, you can include rape as a main character is raped in the sequel.

I had rape, but not abomination. The scene where drunk Rhett grabs Scarlett and carries her up the staircase to the bedroom is considered marital rape by many. (Get ready to hear there is no such thing from the usual "experts" here.)

What is the abomination scene? (By abomination I mean an abomination to God.)
