    I'm old enough that I can only vaguely remember the Huntley-Brinkley sign-off, so I missed seeing David Brinkley at the height of his popularity. I always enjoyed watching the presidential nominating convention coverage in the summers and Brinkley was the main reason. While he is acknowledged as a great writer for television, his ability on live TV to ad-lib and turn a phrase is and was unmatched. I can take all of the TV anchors I have ever seen, put them in a bag, and pull one out and it makes little difference which one I watch. They are all about the same. Except David Brinkley. He was one of a kind. What follows is a short, true story he told of life in Washington, D.C. in the 1930s. It comes from his 1988 book Washington Goes To War. It is one of my favorites.

    I didn't know he was gone... but I am not surprised. I guess we must have been more the Walter Cronkite types when I was a kid, because the famous pair is better known to me from Tom Lehrer's So Long Mom World War III song than from their signature sign-off:
