GOP Candidates backing down on the Affordable Care Act?

GOP candidates show signs of retreat on full Obamacare repeal as midterms approach

Republican candidates have begun to retreat in recent weeks from their all-out assault on the Affordable Care Act in favor of a more piecemeal approach, suggesting they would preserve some aspects of the law while jettisoning others.

The changing tactics signal that the health-care law — while still unpopular with voters overall — may no longer be the lone rallying cry for Republicans seeking to defeat Democrats in this year’s midterm elections.

Guess they finally realized that people figured out they weren't really that interested in overturning the ACA. Nothing but politics and a tool to be used just like abortion.

Don't be misled. Preach the Gospel!!!:jesus:

No, more like they've come to realize there are good things in the ACA and that people like parts of it.

The Republicans are building a track record of restricting abortions on a state-by-state level. They are succeeding, though slowly.

They're caving.

This is true, but it has only affected the folks who could not afford a privately funded abortion. But, yes, there have been gains.

It is just a flat out lie that abortion has been nothing but a political tool. That has been debunked over and over again on this board. Funny thing is each time threads are started debunking that false liberal myth those who claim it never show up to comment.

Exactly. We are making slow strides, but they are victories nonetheless.

Required counseling on ALL options before an abortion will be provided, waiting periods, laws that require abortion providers to be within so many miles of a hospital (shutting down many isolated providers), and more are small gain, but gains nonetheless.

I don't know of any Republican who thinks abortion is a "tool" of politics. It's a deadly serious issue.

Just could be the Republicans are waking up to the fact that the Affordable Care Act is turning out to be more of a success than a failure. Nothing worse than a dead horse waking up and biting those who pronounced it dead. Bad news for Obama haters.

But over the past few weeks, the news has started to roll in the other direction. Enrollment has surged beyond expectations. Costs are coming in lower than predicted. Various reports say the number of uninsured Americans is falling. Now it's good news snowballing, and it's critics who increasingly seem to have missed the mark with their warnings of inevitable collapse.

For all the partisan rancor over Obamacare, there's always been a lot of agreement about what the possibilities were—how the law could fail and how it could succeed.

…That means the GOP is an awkward spot, but it doesn't mean they will or should reverse course. If you look at the polls, the GOP is on the right track. The health law is not popular, never has been, and there's little indication that it is gaining in popularity now that its coverage expansion—its biggest, most widely felt benefit—has kicked in. Even the low-income cohort who ought to benefit most from the law believe that their insurance options have not improved this year. Just 14 percent of the public thinks they've been helped by Obamacare. And in perhaps the most telling sign that there's no big turning point in sight, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi says that Democrats won't run on the health law this year. Republicans may not know quite how to talk about health policy, but Democrats aren't exactly sounding confident about their work on it either.

The people who support the ACA are hoping that the aspects of it that people like will make up for what they do not like and all the criticism will go away and it will just be accepted.

That will never happen. What is true is that regardless of the types of coverages in the ACA that people do like it will never be enough to make up for facts like:

1. The government is forcing us to buy it.
2. The cost of it is as much as ten times more
3. We are being forced to pay for coverage we do not personally need.

Sorry but it aint going to happen.

If it is a success it is because people will always find a way to adapt and overcome.

Anyone with an ounce of intelligence knows there is nothing in the ACA to "like." Take one gander at the VA healthcare system -- that's your future. What's there to like?

As Bro. Curtis said, they're caving. And if they're caving, buy guns. The revolution starts sometime around late winter or early spring.

Yeah, the ACA is GREAT! I have to get care for a loved one outside of the United States now, despite having the same insurance for years, because now they cannot get in to see the doctor because of the back-up of appointments, and waiting is a really bad option.

Turns out, in the nearby rural town (population 17,000+), NONE of the doctors' offices are accepting the state's enactment of the ACA. So those poor folks that signed up on that particular plan are having to travel to other towns or cities to get care.

How is that considered a "success"?

Seems that is an indication the more people are being insured and can see a doctor. Would you rather those folk had no insurance and could not see a doctor?

It is like everything in life, there is the positive and the negative in everything.

(slaps head) They're still not seeing a doctor! Didn't you see the part about "back-up of appointments"?

Back-up of appointments means there are lots of folk seeing the doctor. If that were not true there would be time slots open.

Thanks for insinuating I don't have an ounce of intelligence.

1. No denial of insurance for pre-existing conditions.
2. Removal of the caps on annual payouts by insurance companies.
3. Ability of parents to carry children on their policies through age 26.

What's not to like on this list?

Its not a choice it is mandated a 20 year old man is not a "children"

It's not a mandate, it's a choice, and a 20 year old could still be claimed as a dependent and/or could be a student or could not otherwise afford insurance. Why in the world would you want to deny parents the ability to buy insurance for their kids?
