Sen. Bob Corker R-TN says that we should raise the federal gasoline taxes.

Just when you thought that it was possible to drive the car again....

Larry Kudlow, Wall Street guru, wrote an editorial against such an idea and pointed out the that gasoline tax is being spent on things other than interstate highways.

Said Kudlow in part:

"What a great idea. American consumers and businesses finally get a break with plunging oil and gasoline prices. Main Street finally has something to cheer about. And then Mr. Corker weighs in with a wet-blanket proposal to raise federal gasoline and diesel taxes by 12 cents a gallon over two years from the current 18.4 cents."

Charles Krauthammer is advocating raising the federal gas tax by $1 a gallon coupled with an equivalent reduction in the FICA tax.

Back to the O/P, I liked Krauthammer's idea. The give and take, but democrats will never vote to decrease any tax.

But I see one guy, not the GOP. The O/P is kinda misleading.

When did the tax Rates for poor people get higher then rich people.

Under the current tax code, a husband and wife with no children pay no tax on the first $20,300.
For the couple with 2 children - no tax on the first $28,200.

And if you are rich, you might have to fill in line 45 - which would ADD to your tax burden.

Back to the O/P, I liked Krauthammer's idea. The give and take, but democrats will never vote to decrease any tax.

It is intriguing. I presume his proposal would keep the employer's FICA rate the same and only reduce the employee's contribution rate. There is recent precedence for this as Obama cut the employees FICA rate from 6.2% to 4.2% for a couple of years.

this is a terrible idea, and if Congress thinks this tax increase will go unnoticed, they are wrong. This proposal is a dramatic increase and they say they are trying to replenish some highway fund they are mismanaging.

It's a strike (increase) while the iron (gas prices) is hot (relatively lower). But a regressive tax is a regressive tax.

To rebuild infrastructure--bridges, interstates, etc.

If it were to be offset by a decrease in the FICA tax (or some other tax) it would put money back in the consumers pocket and give them a bit of control over the amount of gasoline they need to buy. In other words, if you were to get $15 a week back from some tax reduction but were spending $15 a week more on gasoline due to taxes, you might opt to get a more fuel efficient car, plan trips more efficiently or drive less.

Don't know much about Corker, but my impression of him right now is that he is an idiot, a fool ...or worse.
