Gospel Celebration

    This Sunday morning, we're having a Gospel Celebration in our worship service. I was going for those old gospel songs that don't appear in our hymnals anymore. Our choir is really excited about a service of nothing but these great old standards, and is looking forward to helping me lead these songs, most of which have multiple vocal layers. Sunday night, we'll return to our normal blended style. Here's the songs we're planning on singing Sunday morning, not including invitation hymns. What do you think?

    Joshua! I think that's a great list! I miss singing things like 'Victory in Jesus', 'Love Lifted Me' and others. :(

    This past Sunday our bulletin showed we were going to sing 3 older hymns in a row. Just as I picked up my hymnal I felt a tap on my arm.... "Mom, we need help in Children's Church". So........ same thing happened on Palm Sunday except I volunteered to help and happened to see that bulletin list of songs!

    We sometimes have 'singing's' with other churches and usually end up singing the old tyme hymns then.

    I have a particular fondness for "His Eye is on the Sparrow" too - but for more than one reason. This music was composed by an ancestor of mine, Charles H. Gabriel (my grandmother on Mom's side was a Gabriel, and he is her cousin). I have always loved the song itself and was really impressed when I found out that I was related to the composer.

    But the funny part of this story is that my grandmother refused to even acknowledge that Charles Gabriel was a family member. She considered his music "devil music" because it was not the style that she considered suitable for a Southern Baptist church! Funny how a song that has become such a classic hymn in our lexicon was considered to be "too modern" in its own time. Makes me laugh every time I think about it - and I am sure that Grandma is turning over in her grave every time I sing it for special music!

    Celebration is a time I believe that is reserved for after the harvest. Too much work to do now for the church to be celebrating, we need to be in the field working, singing "Work for the Night is Coming".

    Just to let you all know that the service of "Celebration" on Sunday morning went extremely well. We sang, the congregation was moved as they sang, and many wept at the memories that were thick in the room. Our pastor was stirred and delivered a stirring message on "Steps Leading to the Fall of Men", and the Spirit moved. Many came forward for prayer, and there were a few decisions made for Christ. It was a good time of worship.

    Joshua! What a praise! Wonderful. Guess what? Our Minister of Music was away and our Minister of Education took over. We sang all old hymns and the choir and trio did old stuff. The congregation sang their hearts out! Oh How I enjoyed all the old songs........

    Scott, yes i have sung several. My personal favorite is The Battle of Jericho for obvious reasons.

    His stuff is great, although most are a little out of reach for my church choir. [​IMG]
