    Gospel Singers in the Church

    I began preaching in Jan. 1974.Most of that time I've also traveled in a gospel group singing in lots of churches. I seen all kinds of things during these travels in different kinds of churches. People do things differently all over the country.Different is not to say wrong,just different. People have different customs and traditions in different parts of the country which carry over in their churches. A preacher was taking up a love offering for the singers one time and looked over at us and said(you boys not going out and buy no beer with this are you)?

    Another time we were about to sing and the preacher said.(God don't call no singers,just preachers). Well I'll not debate that here , but anytime the Word is given rather in song or preaching the Holy Spirit will use it to reach the lost and encourage Christians.

    Last week we were singing in a church concert in Gibsonville,NC. We were singing with our real nice soundtracks (cause I find it easier to minister with them rather than play)and sometimes we gather around the keyboard and do some old songs which we had already finished doing . We were about to give an invitation when the Holy Spirit impressed upon me to do "Farther Along", so I looked over at my boys and said Farther Along.It had already been a good service and had we went home it would have been good. BUT! When we sang that song the Holy Spirit moved even further in the hearts and minds of Gods people.In a fairly large church about half were at the alter receiving a blessing from above.

    Preachers, Invite some gospel singing into your church.

    Psalm 40:1-3 "I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock(new birth), and established my goings(new creature). And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord."
    Preacher/ Music Minister: Why do you/ or not/ invite good, Godly singers into your church

    We do have have good Godly singers at our church.... the homegrown type.
    But we don't invite the big names because our church is too small (about 65 in attendance, and it now costs too much to book em.) The last Southern Gospel group that I heard in a local church talked more about their need for a new bus than Christ!

    The time before that, it was more like a bad show from branson... very cheesy.

    I don't doubt there are good ones out there, but they cost too much.

    To me it has become an industry and only the bigger churches can afford it.

    So we stick with homegrown... Just as holy as the imported ones. (sometimes more)

    I get calls all the time wanting me to let some singer perform.
    Some are tempting... but when I look at my church's budget... I can't.

    I understand there are some as you describe, but most that I know( what we would call weekend warriors ) only want to minister for Jesus. Just as in any part of life you always remember the bad , but there are so many groups that Gods anointing is on, and people will be saved and Gods people blessed from their ministry.
    Full time groups can be expensive for a small church,but most of the weekend warriors are not. Lots are still going for love offerings which many times do not even meet their expenses

    Yeah, I am sorry I sounded so negative... I really am not... I have been one of those weekend warriors.... and I loved it.
    The ones I listed are full time.

    There are some good ones, but to tell you the truth, having been a weekend warrior, I know the costs involved, and I feel bad asking a group to come to WV for low attendance and low love offering.
    Good Godly singers are worth their weight in gold... we have some around here that are great!

    Sorry I'm late but: P(r)ay for choirs

    I never knew there were actual choirs out there charging for worship. I was a part of a choir that was 130+, and award winning. Although we traveled and constantly had expenses, we never asked for money or love offerings. If the church did it, it was on their own.
    We always made it an effort to do fundraisers for funds to travel. By the time we were on the road, expenses are paid. Offerings went towards startup for the next fundraiser, like t-shirts or something. We also used offerings for music equipment, travels can be hard on instruments.

    Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power.
    Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness.
    Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.
    Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.

    It's been my experience that some of the most talented singers anywhere will not be found on American Idol.....they are in our local churches. Many of them will never sing anywhere other than their home church. To me, it's really a blessing to hear someone who is good enough to sing professionally, but whose only desire is to glorify God with their talent.

    I don't think there's anything wrong with making a living by singing Gospel music if that's your gift and calling, but I've also had some experiences like Tim had. I went to see Brian Free and Assurance at a local church several years ago. They were wonderful, not only the singing but also the Gospel message that was spoken by Brian. But then, when it came time for the love offering, he said something like "if every one of you gave $20, it still wouldn't be enough", and he went on and on and on about their expenses, the cost of the bus, etc. I left with the feeling that it was all about the money.

    Some churches are blessed with lots of great music while others are not. I've seen some of those groups your talking about who beg for money and it is a big turn off.It seems to be mostly fulltime groups who have to support all of themselves by singing.
    I've come across a few fulltime evangelist that do the same thing.
    Our group may mention expences to a pastor or music minister when they are booking us if it is a long distance and the cost will be high,But we never mention money when we get to a church. We only mention our CD's to let people know we have them.:godisgood:

    Hi there, what was the name of the group? I am just curious.

    We have a duo out of Denver come in once a year, and they perform in the morning worship and do a full concert on Sunday evening. They sell their CDs and printed music in the foyer. Never once have I seen any commercialism in their performances, only worship and praise. He is an excellent pianist, both play those high soprano trumpets, she plays piano and both sing wonderfully. He writes music, based on scripture. He also writes for Regular Baptist Press - I have seen his children's songs in VBS programs, etc.
