Got To Pay For Socialism

Everything needs to be cut. Nothing should be off the table anywhere. All services and programs need to be slashed in a major way.
Our defense budget is the largest it's ever been, even at the height of the cold war. It's in desperate need of slashing.
Of course I'd also advocate for substantially reducing the entire size of the federal budget. Our government is way too big right now.

Great! Let's start by cutting out the new health care legislation that's going to eat us alive. Then let's shutdown the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Education, Health & Human Services, Labor, Transportation, etc. and turn all that over to each State to do with as they'd like right in our little towns and cities. Then let's close Congress for all but one two-week session every two years so they can't accomplish anything. Let's close the GPO so they we can stop cutting down so many trees to print reams and reams of new regulations. Let's turn over the National Parks to the States in which they are located. Then let's change the Senate back to representing the States. Then let's consolidate the Departments of the Army, Air Force, and Navy into the Dept. of Defense. Then lets cut out about half of all the unified commands. Let's shutdown the Army Crops or Engineers in so far as its role as keeper of waterways. Let's close FEMA and let the States take care of their own emergencies. They'd have to elect competent Governors to do it. Let's eliminate two thirds of the federal courts so they could not accept any new cases. Let's cut out the EPA, FTC, TVA, SBA, and any other independent agency that has three or more letters in its initials. Let's box up everything at the National Endowment of the Arts has sponsored and burn it. Let's shutdown Amtrak before we have to by United, Delta, and American. Let NY and NJ pay for what they want. Let's turn the US Border Patrol over to the Maricopia County Sheriff. Let's put an absolute limit on annual spending - set some aggressive reduction targets - and then turn off the faucet when the tank is low just like folks have to do at home and at work. Set a pecking order from 1 to a million - or how every many programs there are - and when the tank gets low shut the spending down from the lowest to the highest priority. End all extraterritorial use of our military - we don't have the stamina to stick to the job anyways - and revert to a fortress mentality for a decade or two until people see the benefit of going after the enemy where they are instead of waiting for them to come to us. We can save some bucks in the mean time to be used for the bigger battles later. Sell the original US Constitution on eBay to generate some cash - no one reads it anyways. Oh man this great! Prohibit any Congressman or Senator from traveling outside their own State and Washington DC while they hold office - no more war zone junkets! I remember you McGovern and you didn't get to keep that AK-47 did you? We could cut the budget in no time! Ha, ha, ha - fantasy land!

The defense budget has been slashed so much already that my national guard unit doesn't have the money to train us for our two week period this summer. That's scary, folks. Of all things, Defense should remain a priority over most everything else.
Why?, just because the Constitution authorized a military force?
If we spend too much on the military, how can we keep up with all the welfare programs? :BangHead:

With the US's main military opponents being the technologically inferior Iran, N. Korea and islamic terrorists, there should be a shift in how money is spent in the defense budget away from technology and towards intelligence. It sounds like Gates has had this focus in the past.
But the numbers Gates was quoting about the military bureaucracy are quite telling. The article states that overhead or bureaucarcy consists of 40% of the Pentagon's $535 billion budget (not including Iraq and Afghanistan). The defense budget is 1/6 of the total federal budget in 2009 of $3.1 trillion. I think everyone here is supportive of reducing the size of government and this would do exactly that.
In a time of recession and economic uncertainty as well as relative peace, it is right to shift spending from defense to more domestic issues like social security.

In the world such as it is we should never sift away from defense. That is just idiotic. Our constitution gives room for defense spending. It gives no room for federal social justice spending.

Researching this statement in the U.S. Constitution, I was amazed at how controversial this "general welfare" clause is.

I'm not sure how you arrived at that conclusion when all I did was quote a portion of it and comment on how controversial it has been historically. I particularly found the differing interpretations of this clause by James Madison and Alexander Hamilton to be very interesting.

Nothing you have listed prohibits defense spending. And nothing in scripture suggests the needy should be helped via the fed. But then you already know that.
How many homeless people who smell from lack of a bath and far to much alcohol have you hugged, cried with, prayed with and fed lately. I do it almost every day.
How many homeless people do you hug and hold and then have to walk away smelling like them. I do it almost every day.
And by the way most of these are the Navajo that the Fed has been trying to take care of for years.
What do you do on a daily basis? When you spend most of your week reaching out, personally like I do, then you will see the failure of the fed. There are a lot of reasons why people are hungry and in need. But none of it is because the fed is not doing enough. I know this first hand. How about you? Or are you just sitting in your chair pretending you know anything about it.

I think most reasonable people can agree that we have a pretty solid defense of our country provided for by Congress.
