My oldest son has his learners permit.. and was driving tonight...

He was complaining about the headlight dimmer switch on the steering column... he said it was hard for him to keep his hands at 2 and 10 and dim the lights.. he said he wished the dimmer switch was somewhere else.

I set there a minute... laughing inside.. . So I said...

You know what, I have an idea... Let's invent a switch that the driver could step on to dim the lights...

He said, "WHAT A GREAT IDEA!!! When I get my first car I will rig a switch up to do that... That would be a great invention.. I may even make money off of it, if I sell my idea to detroit... Why hasn't people thought of this before"....

I couldn't hold my laughter in...

OH, to be young and ignorant again...

But I guess my age is showing!

Yep.. Tell him to buy an old car and it will come equipped...

Hey, I had an old Ford Falcon that had a intermittent wiper pedal. It was real handy when all you needed was a wipe to clear the side spray from traffic.

IN New York State, the law only requries you to only have ONE hand on the steering wheel at a time! - in spite of what the Anti-cell phone people try to tell you.

Though for the road test I would ask the kids "Do you want to learn how to drive or how to pass the road test!"

Isn't teaching our children to drive fun? These immature idiots who still can't walk straight begin to drive a 1-2 ton vehicle. GREAT idea! ;)

Phew! I was waiting for you to compare to old drivers...

In Georgia, kids can drive at 15. That's when granddaughter got her licence. I told her it wasn't valid in Canada..he, he, he.

We are supposed to have two hands on wheel here to pass the test,,,,,,,,,,but, that one hand gets heavy and seems to fall off in short order.

When I had to retest at 80, the tester didn't even take me for road test. I was all set and he just told me to turn the motor off and come indoors. I told him I had to drive home. He said it was OK. My new licence would be indoors.......phew,,,,ever try taking a test with both hands partialy paralyzed?

    Safe driving, kiddo.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Actually, I loved the job - of course I had a brake on my side! I taught over 1,000 new drivers - about 80% 25 and under

I would still be doing it, but my boss went out of bussiness. You wouldnt believie the cost of insurance and then gas went sky high...
and I wanted a pay raise...

YOU WERE A DRIVING INSTRUCTOR?????????? OK - I have a complete newfound respect for you. Of course having the brake on your side really does help (I seriously think they need to rent those out - I'd have paid any amount of money to have that second brake), but still!!! I gave my daughter's driving instructor a $25 Starbucks card for putting up with those kids like that. MAN, that's not a job I'd want. It's bad enough with my OWN kids.....

Gotta keep him alert, you know. ;)

I thought of getting him an hour massage but I don't think that would have been appropriate. Instead *I'll* take that massage. :D

Not when Salty was teaching. They called them reins.

LeBuick, what year was your Falcon? Mine was a '64 and had that floorboard washer thing, too.

Floor mounted dimmer switch... Had one in a 1969 Fury that burst into flames and caught the carpet on fire. I thought I was seeing little flashes of light near my feet whenever I was dimming the lights. I figured if it was important it would let me know....

Ok, I'm old and ignorant. I didn't get it and was sitting here thinking "that's actually a good idea!"

    Then I read the thread.

In my defense, I'm a foot person and use my feet more than a non-ignorant person probably does and even used to chew my toenails instead of my fingernails.
Now that I'm old though, I'm not sure if I can still get my foot in my mouth, but a lot of people accuse me of it for some reason. :saint:

When I turned 16, I got my driver's license in January. In February, I was driving a fire truck (volunteer firefighter). In March, I was driving a school bus.
