Greedy doctor + evil lawyers + hoaxed parents = dead/crippled kids

    The scare that the MMR vaccine caused autism has now been exposed as a hoax for profit.

    In the USofA autism has increased a magnitude (10 times more) in the last 10 years.

    The latest I heard about autism is that it might be caused by Pitocin - a drug given to women ot induce or speed up labor.

    It seems to be associated with old dads (although correlation does not mean causation) much as Down's syndrome is associated with old moms. Perhaps a delay of having children is contributing - but this is still speculation.

    Here (linkie) is a news article about a study concerning a bacterial cause of autism.

    Dr. Eric Hollander, a psychiatric researcher, seems to be the main proponent of this theory. I found this (linkie - pdf) interesting article which includes speculation that pitocin (oxytocin) could be a cause. One indication that that may not be the cause is that autism seems to be "determined early during the course of fetal development, rather than at birth or afterwards" according to neurologist G. K. Woodward (also in that article).

    But the vaccines seem definitely off the hook for autism.

    Mrs B is a child speech and language therapist and her view is that whilst the causes of autism are multi-factorial, genetics, particularly on the father's side, plays far more of a role than environment (even when Wakefield was all the rage, she was saying that it was more than likely coincidence with MMR ie: the first symptoms of autism typically manifest themselves at about the time the vaccine is usually administered; one might as easily say that celebrating one's child's first birthday may cause autism); frequently she sees kids on the autism spectrum, usually accompanied by their mothers, but on the rare occasions when the father attends, it is fairly obvious that, whilst not so far down the spectrum as his child, he too is more than slightly...er....odd eg: an autistic boy will often have a father with Asperger's syndrome.

    Wakefield has a heck of a lot to answer for...

    Is this journal a peer-reviewed journal? If his peers couldn't find fault with his research, his findings may yet be viable.

    Yes, the Lancet is peer-reviewed journal, but they didn't realize the study had been tainted.
