Does your church have them? If so is it just men or do women do it too?
We have greeters at the doors, in front at the before of worship service they hand out bulletins(others have already gotten one when they came in for Sunday school) but I think they are always men, not sure.

I've never been in a church that didn't have them, and they were always male.

At my current church the deacons also are the greeters. Don't know if that was planned or happened because Deacons like to participate in the service.

In our church, the greeters or ushers are men; however, the First Baptist Church in our city has women greeters.

Our church has greeters and ushers as separate entities. Ushers are male, greeters are male, female, teens, etc.

One we attend now and then use couples. The men do the greeting and introduce the wife and she often asks you to fill out a card, or they find out your name for sure and relay it to the pastor to be used in the worship service to personally greet everyone, then they ask if they missed anyone.

After you've been there a time or two they ask to take your pic with a poloroid and they have it on file with your name and info at the door in case they don't remember you or someone new is greeting.

Our greeters are male and female (usually couples) and are at the 3 main doors. Women 'man' the information desk so new people can be helped to choose a S/S class and find their way around with maps. Women also 'man' the carousel in the nursery area to sign in children and had out beepers but usually the husband hangs around and will help parents find rooms for older kids or S/S classes if they didn't do so at the information desk.

Ushers are men only and they stand outside the sanctuary doors (which are inside) and hand out bulletins.

Our ushers are the ones who take up the offering and may or may not be the greeter who hands out bulletins.

Both male and female greeters at the church we've been attending recently. I've been at churches where the greeters are men only (by church rules), and I've been in churches where the greeters were women only (men not interested).

To me, it makes no difference if a greeter is a man or woman. As long as the churh has a friendly face and a warm handshake for those who enter, that is what matters, at least IMO.

    God Bless!!!

I don't think we have a rule against them, I think none so far have wanted to do it. (women that is). I don't have a problem with myself.
But with the topic of authority always coming up I wondered what people thought of it.

I don't see how women greeters would be wrong, where is the authority there? You're welcoming people, showing hospitality. Not only men have that gift.

We dont have greeters. We all greet one another, and it works out just fine.

Ushers greet people and give out the bulletin at the main sanctuary door and all the ushers are men. Women or men who are not ushers greet at a side door and give out the bulletin there.

At two doors near parking lots where many enter the building, we have greeters - sometimes married couples, sometimes women, sometimes men. They do not hand out bulletins there as not everyone going into those doors is going directly to a service at that time.

Our greeters are both men and women (usually a husband, wife team).

I select the ushers. They are usually men although each Fathers Day I "play a joke" on the pastor and select women.
"Will the men come forward for offering...." :D

I see no reason why ushers and greeters can't be women other than tradition.

One of our deacons acts as greeter and his wife stands with him and hands out bulletins.

We have both greeters and ushers. They are both men and women. I would agree with Rob that tradition is the only reason that many churches don't use both men and women in these ministry capacities. The ladies haven't messed up the offering or set people in the wrong place yet and we have been doing this for 8 years. Sometimes a lady will even be asked to voice the prayer for the congregation

The greeter at the small Baptist church I was attending until recently was a elderly, but godly woman. She did a wonderful job and I always looked forward to seeing her, especially the first month or two when didn't know anybody.

We use both men and women. Different people for the greeters than the ushers.

Donna, what part of Kentucky are you from?

I like the idea of taking a poloroid to help remember names. I also like the idea of "catching the visitor" at the door, also. Some people wouldn't like to be mentioned by name from the pulpit, but I'm sure they let the couple at the door know this.

When we were church hunting, we didn't want to be visited by churches (we were bitter at the time...didn't want to know anyone...just went to warship and find a church home).

I can't say enough how happy we are that the Lord led us where we are now.

Our greeters are a married couple. They hand out the bulletins as we come through the door.

In larger churches we've seen a pulpit in the middle of the hall entrance (these are VERY large churches) and the greeter has maps, bulletins, visitor cards, tracts, etc under the pulpit to hand out. It was like an information desk...pretty cool.
