We just bought a new gas grill from Sears. I haven't grilled in a few years. I'm wondering if I still need to use lava rocks or the like.

Last time I bought a grill, they came with them. This one didn't. It looks like the rocks would go on the bottom of the grill to the sides of the burners, rather than have their own rack.

    Thanks for the help

    Grilling

I don't know about the lava rocks, I love using my charcoal grill. Ya just cannot beat the smokey flavor of the South from a charcoal grill.

If it would be more helpful, I could put up a picture of my new grill's insides so y'all could see what I'm talking about.

Tom, I have no experience with lava rocks, but I found this for you. I've never added anything to the gas grills we've had and they've worked just fine.

Hey Tom, be a man! ----> Read the instructions!

Manufacturers are not including some items like lava rocks and even the propane tanks now-a-days to cut costs and make their product.

Many of the newer (and more expensive) models have heat plates that replace the lava rocks.

Both the lava rocks and the heat plated perform the same purpose; they protect the gas jets from the dripping juices and spread the heat more evenly.

I've read the manual. The manual says nothing about lava rocks (not the most helpful manual I've ever seen). The burners are covered by "heat tents" - metal tent looking things that cover them under the cooking grate. The last grill I bought also had a long heat tent covering the burner (single burner).
