Have any secrets to save money grocery shopping? How about sharing a few favorites.
I know some peopel do coupons,a dn I used too, but I don't buy a lot of name brand foods, and I don't buy most boxed foods, like rice a roni, those flavored pasts and potatoes. So I rarely do coupons anymore.

I never collect a recipe that any ingredient is going to be costly, or has too many ingredients that I'll have to buy becasue I don't keep it around.
I shop at several stores to get best prices, and some I only go to for good meat sales.
I do not buy meat that isn't on sale, I haven't paid regular price for meat in probably 20 years.

I buy almost all my canned foods at Save A Lot, and whatevers on sale at other stores.
I shop salvage stores for dented cans or boxes, but you have to be careful, and make sure it isn't 3 years out of date. Also I have found items there you can not buy in local stores here in our small towns, or items I couldn't afford from a regular store.

I buy off brands mostly. For months now they been having my favorite brand beans on sale 3/$1. (I love Luck's beans), so I stock up, we like just a little beans and not a whole pot most of the time.
I noticed a lot of stores are now having a $1. isle, everything is $1. or 2/$1.

I buy fresh veggies at a produce market, and in summer at the farmer's market, plus anyone who has something fresh on sale. Last week I bought the freshest looking mushrooms I've ever seen for $0.99 (that little 8oz pack).
So what is your battle plan for food buying?

    Great ideas!

Biggest thing in my house that raises the bill? Bringing the husband along! Men throw all sorts of things into the cart that ends up costing big bucks. Junk food, gadgets, etc. Kids, too, if you let them.

Making a weekly menu and a shopping list will also help.

Planning meals has been a biggie for us. We all go together - its just easier that way. If I go with the filrs, with 2 munchkins in the buggie, there's not a lot of room for much else! (Maybe THAT should be the plan!)We buy off-brand, too, but we dont skimp on lean beef. Its just something we feel is worth it. Fish, shrimp, chicken and turkey, we buy the Walmart brand if they have it. Every week we buy a Rotisserrie chicken and after we eat it, we make a stock from it and free it. So when we want some soup or gumbo (pretty often) we have the seasoned stock already there. No canned broths! We also grow veggies and freeze them for use throughout the year, too. We try to use fruit as dessert, when we actually have dessert. We need some more corner cutting ideas, though. Sometimes, the bill seems outrageous. Part of it is that we feed 3 extra teenagers every week, and also a couple (like parents to us) eats with us every WEd. night. Kinda like potluck, but its still extra.

Tatertot, try looking for a salvage store, they really are worth it if you can find the right one. And only once have I bought anything I had to throw away, lost on $1. for the hundreds I've saved since I started.

Another things is bread stores, you can save a lot, buy them at an extra good price and throw them in the freezer.

Just be careful of the items you choose, examine the packaging too. I buy Kraft salad dressinsg there for $1. We just had one to close and they (dressings)were 2/$1.50, they had a big closing sale, 1/2 off! Bought a bunch of stuff. I stopped buying cereals because of the same reason. Now we only have one in the area, and a town 10 miles away has a small one, need to find more, different stores get different items, you can find stuff at one and not the other. I used to get a gallon of olive oil for $5. took a year or more to use one of those.

I actually buy some groceries at Big Lots. We love those Lipton Rice or Pasta mixes and they're only 49 cents at Big Lots! For a quick meal, I can cut up one steamed or braised boneless chicken breast (or use left overs) and throw it in to make a one pot meal.

Sams Club is my way to save money. We only have one grocery chain in San Antonio (HEB unless you count Super Walmart too) and no real competition for it.Sam's is less expensive on just about everything.

We buy at WalMart and Sams - they are next to each other. With my small kids, its really asking for it to drag them all over town looking at salvage stores.
I do get paper products and bleach, cleaning supplies, and even some canned chicken at Family Dollar - its much cheaper there. And our local IGA grocery store (VEry expensive) does have meat specials where you can pick 5 packages for $20. They also do chicken leg quarters for 25 cents a pound sometimes.

We don't have a salvage store anyplace nearby and our day-old bread store closed a couple of years ago.

That leaves Aldis for most things and IGA for the meat I can't buy at Aldis.

Meat is not going on sale around here like it used to and bacon is OUTRAGEOUS!

I haven't bought bacon in a long time. Now I will only buy the 10 pound package, it's much cheaper, and I divide it up and freeze it. Robert and Tony are the only ones who eat it, I don't. Last time I think I ate 2 slices.
We have those 5/$20 meats too, but many times it is cheaper to buy the meat you want thats not on the 5 for 20. I personally think that 5 for 20 drives up meat sale prices. Robert and Pam and mom buy them, I haven't so far. Looking for even beter bargains. Probably the only real meat sales we get now are chicken, breast .99 and quarted .49, we have quarters and rarely buy them, when I do I make chicken and dumplings or barbecue.

I've enver shopped at Sam's, don't you have to buy in bulk there, like large cans of veggies? Those of you who shop there, what do you usually buy? I've heard they are building a Sam's Club in Bowling Green, and we sometimes go there to shop.

I used to buy a lot at Big Lots too, but I can't eat most of it now. But I do find some low carb foods there. I bought Carb Options pasta sauce with big chunks of italian sausage in it, it was really good, on low carb pasta of course.

I've never personally been to Sam's Club, but I used to live in a neighborhood, where four families chipped in the money, and one person would go down each month and purchase everything (70 miles round trip).

They usually bought regular sized cans, but by the case. When they got back, the things were divided up equally.

When my sister was younger, she would go down once a month and buy things. She got Worchestershire Sauce by the gallon and she always filled up my smaller bottle for me, as I use that a lot in cooking.

Isn't there a yearly fee or something to shop ther?
Sounds interesting. I think they usually have a free day to look when they have a grand opening, at least they did in Louisville a few years ago.

We found that you can get things CHEAPER at regular stores than at Sam's if you buy what's on special. Jim's old boss always gave all his employees Sam's memberships each year. A FEW things were a lot cheaper but I could buy store brands on sale for less and not have to buy cases full. We have a smaller home and a tiny pantry. I had to keep parts of the cases downstairs in a walk-in closet right inside the door.

Sam's Club and Wal-Mart are the same company, but I've always heard that you won't save any money at Sam's unless you're buying (regularly) for a family of seven or more.

We buy things there (SAM's) that freeze or store easily. Paper goods, boxed juice, bottled water, and frozen meat items. I usually only have to buy chicken strips, shrimp, etc once every 2 months for our family. We also get gas there when we can - its about 15 cents cheaper than other gas stations.

Yes donnA, it's $35 a year. You and Hubby would each get a card.
It's worth it to us. There are things there that we can't get anywhere else, and we also get the things that store easily. We bought a freezer there last August. I'd been wanting one for a while, and the way our kitchen is set up, we have to have a small fridge or tear out a section of the cabinets. That doesn't give much freezer room.
We use Miracle Whip alot, and the 32 oz. jar is about $3.25at the other stores, at Sam's we get a 60 oz jar for $3.55, that's like a second jar for 30 cents! (Don't use Mayo, so don't know if it's priced the same.)
I've even thought about getting the gallon of Worcestershire Sauce. Does anybody know if it has to be refrigerated after opening?

    Is everything in large containers?
Like can you buy regular size cans of peas, only like a case of them?
I've seen warehouse shopping on tv before and people buy 100 rolls of toilet paper. So it worries me. Guess I would just have to visit to see.

I once had a nightmare about warehouse shopping beleive it or not. I lost my children and husband and couldn't find my kids and no one would help me.
