Around the fifth century, the European Celts believed that animals had certain "supernatural" powers on special days that were half-way between the Winter Equinox and Spring Solstice (forty days after Christmas and forty days before Easter). Folklore from Germany and France indicated that when groundhogs and bears came out of their winter dens too early, they were frightened by their shadow and retreated back inside for four to six weeks.

When Christianity came into being, the formerly pagan observance was called "Candlemas Day." In America, Candlemas Day became "Groundhog Day" to singularly honor the whiskery waddler. The current tradition calls for "Spring Just Around the Corner" if the groundhog does not see his shadow. However, look for "At Least Six More Weeks of Winter" if the groundhog spies his pudgy image!

Groundhogs are classed as mammals. Their order is Rodentia. They primarily eat healthy vegetables and salad items. They are nocturnal, sociable and "chatter" to those they know in fluent groundhogese. Groundhogs in the wild live only one year (approximately). A healthy groundhog consumes as much as three quarters of a pound of vegetables a day – equivalent to a 175 pound person eating 15 pounds of salad a day.

Haha. I decided a few years ago that I would celebrate Groundhog's Day just for fun. It makes everyone laugh cause I send them cards. Haha.

The Official site of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club

My daughter's going to college in Punxsutawney.
Don't tell anyone but she says that there's actually quite a few "Phil's".

She will be waking up early tomorrow morning and celebrating with the fat squirrel .

Bright and sunny here in PA, so the big guy saw his shadow. There are plenty of imitators, but Phil is the only groundhog that matters.

Phil only matters above the Mason Dixon line. Us southerners are having an early spring!

That my story and I'm sticking to it. :D

Btw, my guinea pigs didn't see their shadows either.

Ole' Phil will have to burrow through a pretty thick blanket of snow. I hope it doesn't hinder him from seeing, I could use a few more good snow storms before spring.

It is about 37 above 0 here in the great northeast part of MN. A real heat wave for this time of year, so spring has to be coming early.

I'm dreaming of spring. Better yet, summer. I prefer it to be sweltering hot. Nothing better than going to the lake on a scorching hot day. I can't wait!

Phil is just 39% correct in his prediction, just about the same as my NFL predictions. Cold and rainy here in Central Texas, so, early spring?

I DREAD summer because of Nick's mosquito allergy. It sure ruins his fun! Now PeachCare won't pay for his Zyrtec or Singulair which helped keep his swelling down to quarter or fifty cent sized welts.

SPRING and WINTER here in Georgia for me! It's to be low 60's the end of this week. [IMG]

Saw Phil last fall. He and his stunt double live at the library. I think the only shadow seen in Punxsutawney this morning was caused by the opening of wallets and purses.

Well, out to the back yard to do a snow dance. It's the least I could do for PA Jim! :D

TOP 10 REASONS TO CELEBRATE GROUNDHOG DAY

*11. February 2nd is on nearly every calendar.

    10. Helps relieve cabin fever.

    9. Spring or not, it's six weeks till St Urho's Day.

    8. Forecast is no less reliable than the National Weather Service.

    7. At least one of them critters is bound to see things your way.

    6. It is a no-cost celebration (Valentine's Day is coming all too soon)

    5. Unlike the Easter bunny, he keeps his dirty paws outside.

    4. As they used to say on radio: "The Shadow knows".

    3. It's fun to say "Punxsutawney".

    2. If a rodent can bring us an early spring, more power to him.

    1. In Wyoming, either way we come out ahead.

    * I have a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin, a Big Ten conference
school, which explains why there are eleven reasons in the list.

(borrowed from a website long forgotten!)

I sent that list to my daughter this morning.

She attended the event with more than 50K fat-rat loving people.

See walked into the town from her campus around 2 AM and stayed till about 6 AM.

She told me, "It's not a family event, dad" Lot's of loud noisy bands etc.

At about 5 AM they shot off fireworks.

At about 5:30 they woke up Phil and he saw his shadow.

...now from what I hear that means 6 more weeks of winter.

...If he didn't see his shadow there is only a month and a half of winter left.
