Growing or shrinking our language

"As vocabulary is reduced , so are the number of feelings you can express, the number of events you can describe, the number of the things you can identify! Not only understanding is limited, but also experience. Man grows by language. Whenever he limits language he retrogresses!" - A Plague of Angels, Sheri S. Tepper,

We "grow by language". This is truer than Ms. Tepper might have known (though, I don't really know her beliefs). The ones who know Christ - the Word, God's final, everlasting Word - have the greatest potential for growth.

The other side of the coin - and where Tepper put most of her emphasis was on the loss of language. I think that this ought to be a great concern for us today. How many times, when we read an article or comment that we agreed with, stifled the impulse to respond in kind in favor of just hitting the "like" button?I am not referring just to here at BB but anywhere. I think we are to some degree blunting our ability to communicate (and then, consequently, to think).

But it seems that these one-tap responses have moved in for good. A while back my niece wrote something clever and I wrote just a couple of words to that effect. She then said I was "old school", that I should have just hit the like button!
