Rep. Ron Paul has reintroduced H.R. 1146, a measure that would end U.S. involvement in the United Nations. With anti-UN sentiment growing, the time may be right to Get US out!

Congressman Ron Paul (R-Texas), a medical doctor, represents the 14th district of Texas. He is one of the few steady voices for fiscal restraint and strict adherence to the U.S. Constitution.

Recently, Dr. Paul reintroduced in the new Congress H.R. 1146, a measure that would end U.S. involvement in the United Nations and rescind diplomatic immunity for United Nations officials. Dr. Paul was interviewed on March 27th about H.R. 1146 and the war in Iraq.

THE NEW AMERICAN: What prompted you to introduce H.R. 1146, a bill that would get the United States out of the United Nations?

Congressman Ron Paul: I introduced this legislation because I do not believe it is in our interest to be in the United Nations, principally because it undermines our national sovereignty. And I think current events verify that.

TNA: Nearly all politicians say that they support national sovereignty, but most people only have a vague idea of what national sovereignty means. What is national sovereignty?

Paul: That means that a country’s citizenry controls its own destiny. In our case, the people through their representatives and the contract of the Constitution determine everything we do, whether it has to do with trade, immigration, borders, or national defense. And the responsibility falls on the legislature rather than any international body, like NATO, the WTO, NAFTA, or any of these organizations that make decisions for Congress. Even though they may be well-intentioned and even correct at times, the principle of sovereignty ought to be protected. And if they have a correct position, we should implement that position on our own rather than by some type of a mandate from an international body.

Again, I don't think that we should get out of the UN, for its many faults, but I do think it is time to get out of some of the associated commissions such as the Disarmament Commission, which welcomed Saddam's Iraq, and the Human Rights Commission, chaired by Libya.

Get US Out has been a common refrain of the John Birch Society and its conspiracist organ, The New American, for years. They're the same outfit that say that William F. Buckley Jr. and Jeane Kirkpatrick are part of the world government conspiracy, the New World Order.

It's about time! UN stands for United Nations and we are only united when another country needs us; not when we need them. Let's get OUT!

The UN has its faults, but the world needs a forum for nations to peaceably address their issues rather than going to war.

The US needs to take the plank out of its own eye before it starts finger-pointing and stop treating the UN like an adjunct to US foreign policy when it says 'yes' to the US and an irrelevance when it says 'no'. Woodrow Wilson would be turning in his grave.

U.S. Enraged as Cuba Returned to U.N. Rights Body

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Cuba was reelected without opposition on Tuesday to the United Nations' top human rights body, prompting a fierce response by Washington that it was "like putting Al Capone in charge of bank security."

The voting took place in the 54-nation U.N. Economic and Social Council, which two years ago ousted the United States from the Human Rights Commission for the first time since Washington helped found it in 1947. The United States was returned to the body in a vote the following year.

In Washington, White House spokesman Ari Fleischer told reporters: "Cuba does not deserve a seat on the Human Rights Commission. Cuba deserves to be investigated by the Human Rights Commission."

In the last month, the Cuban authorities have rounded up 75 dissidents and imprisoned them for terms of up to 28 years. As part of the crackdown, Cuba also executed three men who hijacked a ferry in a failed bid to reach the United States.

"Having Cuba serve again on the Human Rights Commission is like putting Al Capone in charge of bank security," Fleischer said. "It is an inappropriate action that does not serve the cause of human rights in Cuba or at the United Nations."
