I grew up a New York Islanders fan and always had great respect for Tony Esposito. The Islanders had their own HOF goalie in Billy Smith.

When I grew up down here in Texas, hockey was definitely a outlier. What we knew of it was something like the guy who said he went to a fight and a hockey game broke out. Yet following sports generally, we knew the names of some of the greats, a few I can still recall -- like Bobby Hull, Gordie Howe, and Bobby Orr. And there was another Esposito, Phil, maybe a brother of Tony.

Esposito was a good goalie who became a great goalie. Early in his NHL career he was susceptible to the high shot. I recall seeing Yvan Cournoyer fire one from just inside the red line and Tony went to his knees while the puck sailed in just under the crossbar. Later Esposito would play those shots right.
