Tomorrow (October 31) is Halloween.

What is your opinion on whether or not a Christian should observe Halloween--IOW, dressing up in costumes, going door-to-door "trick or treating," etc.

Most Christians usually seem to fall into two categories when it comes to Halloween. Either they want nothing to do with it, or else they participate to some extent with it.

What's your opinion on Halloween?

We'll be going door-to-door asking for candy. I'll stand on the sidewalk and the kiddos will go to the doors. They'll be wearing costumes. We'll be eating candy. It'll be grand!

How deep are you looking to drill, ktn? I know some Christians who think even the mere mention of Halloween will send their children into a spiral of drug use and Satan worship. I know some who dress up with their children and take them trick-or-treating.

Halloween is like a lot of other topics. It's all in how the parent handles teaching it to the child.

You can track a history of the day and see Pope Gregory III moving All Saints Day to November 1 to give Christians an alternative to pagan harvest festivals, although there is a history of Catholicism moving holidays to override pagan festivals, claiming more and more of the calendar for Catholicism, regardless how the particular day fits with the actual intent of the holiday (See Christmas. I've read several contrasting articles that say, given the evidence apparent in the gospels, that Jesus would likely have been born in the Spring, yet we celebrate Christmas on December 25. I'm no historical scholar; I'm just relating to you the articles' point.)

I'll be passing out candy and an invitation to church youth activities.

We will be out of the house, but I bought some candy for the folks at work and I have some Halloween tracts to distribute.

Most likely, we will only be home for a short time today but I have some candy anyway. Last year we had NO kids come to our door because I think most TOT in town and at the mall but this year it's Friday so we may have more come. I need to remember to bring in my pumpkins and plants just in case.

Today is my son's 14th birthday too and he is so excited to be going to the Red Barn Dinner at church with the youth group. It's a fun dinner (hard to explain but you pick two items for each course and one or more of those items may or may not be a utensil so you may end up with a knife and soup or a spoon and spaghetti) and he's really looking forward to it. I have to go to the runner's shop to pick up my t-shirt and number for the race I am not running in tomorrow because I am just getting over being sick with a fever and running in 38 degree temps just might not be good for this crud in my lungs.

So yes, we will be opening our door when we are home to give candy out to the neighborhood kids but it's not a priority. I don't love Halloween because of the destruction but fortunately, our village has a great police force who will patrol the area carefully.

Only time of the year you can tell your kids to get out of the house and take candy from strangers. I'd say take advantage of the paradox.

We will be going to a fall festival at a church near our home. Hope they got some decent adult food.

I'm passing out candy and scaring just as many neighborhood kids as I can.:smilewinkgrin: They love it.

A couple of years ago, I was scaring so many kids, that one of the kids across the street came and volunteered to "lure" the unsuspecting into my web of horror!!!!

In light of his new film "Saving Christmas," Kirk Cameron is also speaking out on Halloween celebrations, urging Christians to participate in the holiday this year.

"Saving Christmas" attempts to debunk theories that Christmas is still rooted in pagan traditions. In a recent interview, Cameron addressed the same theories as they are applied to Halloween

"Early on, Christians would dress up in costumes as the devil, ghosts, goblins and witches precisely to make the point that those things were defeated and overthrown by the resurrected Jesus Christ," Cameron continued. "The costumes poke fun at the fact that the devil and other evils were publicly humiliated by Christ at His resurrection. That's what the Scriptures say, that He publicly humiliated the devil when He triumphed over power and principality and put them under his feet. Over time you get some pagans who want to go this is our day, high holy day of Satanic church, that this is all about death, but Christians have always known since the first century that death was defeated, that the grave was overwhelmed, that ghosts, goblins, devils are foolish has-beens who used to be in power but not anymore.

Today, (31st), we had book character day at my public school. You had to bring your book to show you were a legitimate book character and the only rule was to be "appropriately dressed." It's funny - but everyone seems to know what that means and we never issues.

I went as the Wicked Witch of the West - green face and all - and it was quite fun.

Last night, (30th), my church held its annual community Fall Festival with free food and games for the community. We invite the community to come and eat and play games and yes, dress up in costumes.

Because so many who do come are unchurched, there are some scarey costumes, but we don't make a big deal of it. We make sure we get everyone's name and address and other info, if we don't have it, and use this night as an outreach foundation.

Many of the children in my church's neighborhood are from a low-income apartment projects and it's a great tool to find out who needs a church home and family.

We have lots of families and many children who attend our church regularly because of nights like this.

When my son was in Sunday School (age six-years) the teacher shared that she asked the kids if they knew why Halloween was a bad day, and why the church didn't celebrate it like we did Christmas and Easter?

My son raised his hand and answered, "I think it's because Halloween is Satan's birthday, just like Christmas is the birthday of Jesus!"

I don't know where he picked up that correlation, but I loved his insight.

Sadly, a divorce and my ex moving with the kids to Texas and not allowing me to visit the kids hurt badly, and unfortunately my son took his own life in April 1999. I miss him to this day, and always will. He had a good sense of humor, and was very insightful.
