Harassment of Preachers in US?

Robert, it is not a new thing. In Canada, in the 50's, we had a number of Baptist ministers put in gaol, in Quebec, for preachng the gospel and handing out tracts, in the streets. At that time, the RCC priests virtually controlled the political scene.

I've actually heard of some pastors being taken to jail and fined for preaching again homosexuality. Cant prove this as I was told about it but I can imagine it happening these days and even with increasing accounts.

 

We're probaly not very far from that in the US considering how things are moving more and more to the left and away from God.

 

There was a man in Canada who was briefly jailed and fined for running a newspaper ad with a pictograph of two men holding hands, a red circle with a slash through it, and Bible verses. (Not the verses themselves, just where they were.) I have a scan of the article somewhere, but I think it's on my other computer which died and I have not yet recovered the HD.

Then, there's this story from Canada about a pastor facing jail time in Canada for being critical of spending tax dollars on homosexuals: Pastor Faces Jail

An acquaintance of mine actually went to jail in Sweden for preaching against homosexuality from the pulpit! He was not even in the streets.'

But, if you're a homosexual rapist who happens to be a teacher, you can get off scot free: No Jail Time for Homosexual Rapist Teacher

 

Yes, the 1st Amendment has helped the preachers' defence.

It turned out bad and the last of the appeals was lost a few months back. The LDS church owns the plaza and has since bought several more blocks of main street. There are still place where you have free speach but they are several blocks away. As it is now the LDS church regulates what is spoken, what clothing can be worn, smoking and tract giving along several blocks of downtown SLC. And several preachers have been arrested by private LDS security (they hire retired CIA and FBI) and taken to jail. A few were only quietly handing out tracts.

 

If they own it, they should be able to regulate it, right or wrong.

Oh, also the case in Philly a while back. The videos on the news showed the preachers at a homosexual rights march (I refuse to call them "gay"), and they had permits even, and they were being peaceful and only talking to those who came to talk to them.

They were arrested and face felony "hate speech" charges because of their chosen venue, and those who physically assaulted them were not even arrested.

It happens, and will be happening more and more.

 

Well I generaly agree, I do support a property owners rights.

But I have a few problems with this one.

First the city sold two blocks of downtown mainstreet to the LDS church. No other church, buissness or person were given the oppertunity to purchase the land. I dont know exactly how much 2 blocks of downtown (we are talking 1st and 2nd south right down town) but the church got a sweetheart of a deal.

Second after the LDS church owned the land they realized that the city still owned the sidewalks (easments). You may notice that you own your yard but the city still ownes the sidewalk infront of your house. The church wanted to control who was on and what was said on the sidewalk. One of their big issues was people smoking while walking thru. So the city let them buy the sidewalks. Now the LDS church can control who walks on the sidewalks in the 2 blocks (plus the blocks they already own) right downtown center town.

Nobody else in this city is alowed to buy sidewalks. If I dont want people smoking on the sidewalk infront of my house I can not buy the sidewalk and no other church has been alowed to buy the sidewalks infront of their church.

So I do have a problem with this deal. The blocks that belonged to all people in this city should not have been sold.

No, it isn't right but you are talking about the Mormon church, and SLC. How many folks on the City Council are Mormon?

Street preachers are generally not harassed in the USofA unless they use a bull horn.

 

Where is the aclu when they're really needed?

Sounds like a case they would be vitally interested in.

SLC and the LDS are just on the verge of a wake up call. With the huge migration of people out of Cali and Nevada the LDS are soon if not already a minority. The LDS church is famous for running this state and making religious laws. People are getting sick of it.

For example several years ago and right in the middle of this town square deal down town SLC people elected a liberal gay mayor who ran on a campain promise of changing SLC alcohol laws. He was elected and re-elected when he said he wanted to replace half of the city councle with non-Mormons. Those were his words. He announced that he will not re-run but SLC will put another just like him in.

Now I dont like Rocky Anderson at all. But I understand the frustration that makes people vote for him.

PS. I have seen more crosses and ikthuses (sp?) on cars then ever in my life and churches are springing up. :godisgood:
