Just before He died, Christ said, "It is finished." I don't see what else it could mean other than the grave, since everything had been accomplished in paying the sin debt of those chosen before the world began. He then arose and ascended to heaven and now He awaits His return to establish the new heavens and earth wherein dwells righteousness.

It was finished before verse 28, ". . . Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished . . . ." That exact word "accomplished" is the very Jesus said translated "It is finished," in verse 30.

Interesting

for him who did not know sin, in our behalf He did make sin, that we may become the righteousness of God in him. 2 Cor 5:21 YLT

afterward the desire having conceived, doth give birth to sin, and the sin having been perfected, doth bring forth death. James 1:15 YLT
ἀποτελεσθεῖσα From ἀπό (G575) and τελέω (G5055) > From τέλος (G5056)

John 19:28 YLT After this, Jesus knowing that all things now have been finished, that the Writing may be fulfilled, saith, 'I thirst;'
τετέλεσται From τέλος (G5056)
V 30 when, therefore, Jesus received the vinegar, he said, 'It hath been finished;' and having bowed the head, gave up the spirit.
τετέλεσται From τέλος (G5056)

Jesus who knew no sin was made sin and gave his life.

John 6:63 YLT the spirit it is that is giving life; the flesh doth not profit anything; the sayings that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life;

At that moment the spirit (life) of him in the hands of the Father
The body of flesh of him still upon the cross
The soul of him into Hades the lowest parts of the earth, the heart of the earth.

Agreed.

Jesus before He physically died, He had finished His payment of our sins.

His physical death was to demonstrate by His resurrection that the sins had been paid. [1 Corinthians 15:17.]

To what is the "heart of the earth" in Matthew 12:40 referring.?
Good question!

According to Thayer's the idea is the central or middle part of something, even if inanimate. Thus Christ's body was hidden away (in a tomb) and not observed from when He was placed and the cover rolled into place until He was observed by humans on Easter morning.

To ascribe more to the phrase seems to me to be needless speculation likely resulting in disunion.
