I am not sure if there is already a thread on this but I can't find it so I figured I'd go ahead and post about it.

So, there is this book. I've heard good Christian people I respect endorse it but I've also heard the negative. I read the book last week and thought it was a lousy book and would not endorse it. I like what Tim Challies had to say on the book and totally agree with him.

Well, our staff put together a list of books for the congregation for summer reading. My husband was in charge of the "grown-up" books and then the children's pastor was in charge of the kid books. This was on the kid list. I removed these books from our box of books that we had available to sell to the congregation for their convenience (we sold them at cost) because I just feel it is not a good book for Christians to be setting their minds on. Are we looking to a 4 year old for our theology?

But I wanted to know what you all thought about it. Just today we had a visitor at church (we meet in a hotel so often we will have the guests come to church with us) and she was raving about Barbara Walter's show that was on last night about heaven and she said she called her pastor and told him that he had to watch it. "It was fantastic!!" she said. She also told me about this book and said that it's a "must read" then told my 11 year old son that he HAD to read it. Umm - no. ;) But I didn't want to get into a discussion with her since she won't be coming back again and it just didn't seem timely.

    So what say you??

I've read bits and pieces of it, so I am not totally familiar with the entire book. But I understand your concern. It's amazing what you will find in churches. In our church bookstore - which is normally pretty good, I've come across books by John Hagee and Joel Osteen. Really? What in the **** were they thinking? Not that every book has to be by RC Sproul or Tim Keller, but Hagee and Osteen?? Gimme a break.

Yep - I've seen that too. I just don't get the lack of discernment.

I haven't read the book, so I know that this absolutely disqualifies me from giving an opinion to its content. I have read critques of the book - both pro and con. After reading them, I decided that the book was not for me. I know many people who have thoroughly enjoyed it and that bothers me.

Here's a really good description of how books like these are not for the discerning spirit. It's from a critique by the following site:

Well, I was a former ESL teacher to Koreans in my country. I saw one of my students reading this. Well, dunno but when she told me that this is a near death experience... I just shunned it... you know... their experiences like Betty Eadie's Embrace By the Light is far from the bible's teachings when you compare... and when we gauge something its always by HIS standards.. if its the truth... or a deception...

I took the time to read the book and to check it against scripture. The book, itself is not the Bible and must not be treated as such. On the other hand, the book is not written by, but rather about, a four year old's experience with God. Since I found no glaring discrepencies with scripture, I see no fault. The story is written in the first person by the lad's father and he is the Pastor of his Church. The book was intentionally released in softback to limit the cost and not for the purpose of profit, my copoy cost me six dollars.

Iḿ soory to report that I, just like all of us here, am not God! But, for this reason I know that I must approach a piece of litturature without predrawn conclusions such as the one I'm seeing here, ¨a book by a four yar old. Nope, that is not a quote but it is the general conscenses of what is stated and we must speak cautiously about Spiritual Matters.

Finished the book this week. Easy to read. Not great literature, but an interesting story. Definitely not a children's book, though it is the story of a four year old, as written by his father - who is also a pastor of a small Weslyan church in the midwest. I would definitely let my older kids read it though.

I agree with th1bill, in that I find no glaring discrepancies with Scripture. (Instead, the book actually quotes a lot of Scripture.) So how much is true versus what the child dreamed, who knows?

That being said, I have a friend who was in a horrific car accident who also had a death/near death experience. He remembers looking down and seeing paramedics working on his body - leaving him for dead, having an angel speak to him, and then having a paramedic take one more look, after which they brought him back. Parts of his story are very similar to the stories in the book (except the part about heaven). I have no reason to doubt him, as he is one of the most honorable Christian men I know. (He doesn't really even talk about it, but shared this with me at one time.) I simply take him at his word.

Don Piper was pronounced dead by several, very experienced officers, Med-Techs and the, very experienced former Vietnam era Medic that prayed until he began to sing with him. Don is from and teaches in the local area and was dead for ninety minutes. His recounting of his time in Heaven is much the same as the pastor's son in this account.

Call me foolish if you wish but I believe!
