Hebrews 2:3, . . . How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

Any of Christ's disciples who were with our Lor Jesus from the beginning of His ministry to have learned the salvation He taught to be able to teach others.

Would "heard" exclude Paul as a possible writer?
Would "them that heard" make Paul a potential candidate?

The theology is Pauline and the Greek mirrors Luke’s writing style. So the author might have been Luke transcribing a sermon from Paul.

A good reason for Paul not to claim the letter outright is that he was the apostle to the gentiles. If you look at the rest of Paul’s writings (there is my bias coming out of hiding) he loved the Jews. He desired for them to be saved. He knew very well the truths of the OT as they applied to the NT. I would be surprised if he had not written anything to the Jews at all, whether or not Hebrews was written by him. He was the Pharisee of the Pharisees. He knew the OT better than most if not all. Who better to give the information contained in Hebrews?

" . . first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him"

level 1 - Words of Jesus Himself
level 2 - Those that heard them (earwitnesses who heard the Words of Jesus)
level 3 - Confirmed to US - writer/readers of Hebrews

Jesus didn't pen these words Himself
Apostles Peter, John, Matthew, Jude, James didn't pen these words (include Paul as apostle, heard Jesus words and chosen late, but still chosen as apostle and did NOT get the message from apostles)

SO, at level 3 . . .
Luke could qualify except he was a doctor not preacher and Gentile not Jew so unlikely
John Mark could qualify, especially since he travelled with Peter and his Gospel is a compilation of sermons of Peter
Apollos could qualify.
Timothy or Titus could qualify
My choice Barnabas could qualify.

I would still disagree that this excludes Paul.
It was at the first spoken by the Lord, to Paul also.
Confirmed by them that heard Christ, as was confirmed by Ananias and the church where Paul immediately found himself.
God also bearing them witness, because Paul had all the information that he needed to believe because God gave witness with the lame healed, the language barriers removed, the miracles that followed the apostles.
In all of these things, Paul is still behind in the timeline.
I still see plenty of room for Paul to fit into this description of “us.”
Paul was not around for the years of Christ’s ministry. These things would have to be confirmed to him, not having been present.
