Hee Haw

I loved Hee Haw. I had no problem with it at all. I watched it as a young boy and teenager.

I have two of the Hee Haw quartet CDs. I love them too!!

Anyway, I had never really thought about the scantily clad women on the show. I have a hard time remembering that aspect of it. I think the last time I saw it, I might have been 8 or 9.

You pose a good question though and I am eager to see everyone else's posts.

 

Yes. Obviously they dressed the women that way to appeal to male viewers, and it's not the kind of appeal the Bible endorses. If the Bible tells women do dress modestly (and it does), how can singing about God mean anything with women dressed that way on the show?

 

How "innocent" the television was in the beginning. Then, fun shows like Hee-Haw came along, and of course, Dukes of Hazard with Daisy in her hotpants. Even shows like Beverly Hillbillies showed some cleavage.

Then, as we "accepted" these, Hollywood went a little further, adding a little more leavening...a lot more bleeped words...and now, what do you have??? A cesspool...& I don't watch it anymore.

 

I agree. They dressed the women to appeal to a male audience because the husband usually controlled what was watched. Also, they must have had some weird idea that country women actually dressed like that. I dare to say that the producers had never known any real country women in jeans and denim shirts or overalls.

And what was with Buck Owens wearing those overalls backwards? That was about the most stupid thing ever. There again is the dumb barefoot hillbilly sterotype that they portrayed as country.
We watched it because my ex wanted to but, being country and a Christian myself, I felt like they were portraying women as just eye candy for the male population. Ever notice how slow and stupid the women talked? They didn't need to have any talent, just look sexy.

 

Back then I was coming of age. At a time when others were Beatles and Beach Boys I was Haggard and Jones. I enjoyed the show then, but I may see it in a different light today. There were some moments in it of clean humor:
"How was your corn crop this year grandpa?"
"Ahh, it was so bad, the crows had to get down on their knees to eat it!"

One must remember that Hee Haw was never intended as a Baptist Disicipleship/Evangelism tool---those ladies dressed like they dressed because the show was where it was---Hollywood and Nashville lookin' for dollars!!!

I don't ger over-concerned with such things as Daisy Mae lookalikes. If the show was full of sexual innuendo or dirty jokes, then I'd be concerned.

We can't just ignore sex...it's a function God built into us. To pretend it doesn't exist is silly. yet, some holier-than-thou types expect everyone to do just that. Within biblical limits, it's as much a part of Christian life as it is in secular life. I mean, THINK ABOUT IT...What first attracted you to your significant other?

Hee-Haw was family-oriented and was one of the "cleanest" TV shows of its day. Best of all, it was FUNNY.

To me, the STUPIDEST genre on TV, the one which really insults the collective American intelligence is the dating-relationship reality genre. Thank God, it's dying out. If THAT'S all there was on TV, I'd DC the cable and hook up an X-Box.

As for stereotyping...Can anyone name a specific group that HASN'T been stereotyped, including Baptists? As for me, I simply ignore the complainers and move on.

Junior Samples selling those cars. I loved the little pigs that used to dance across the screen. They used to make me laugh!
I'm a pickin and I'm a grinnin. There was so much fun to this show. I really didn't pay attention to the underdressed women. Salllllute!
As far as stereotypes we have all had them. I am Irish do you know how many stereotypes people put on me? I either just laugh or ignore it.

 

To be truthful with ya, robycop---its hard to "Ignore the Hee Haw Honeys" and simply move on!!! You're right!! Given a choice---which would you rather watch---the "Honeys" or Junior Samples??? That ought to be a "gimmie!" for any man with eyesight!

 

AF Guy, I loved Hee Haw! But I hate you for getting to live in Hawaii .

 

Hee Haw was silly but it was clean and fun. As far as the scantily clad women are concerned go to any beach in the world on any sunny warm day and you will see scads of women with much less covering than the gals of Hee Haw.

What are we being fed today. "Deadwood", a potentially good western series on HBO which was ruined by all the profanity, "The Ellen Degenerate Show", & "Queer Eye For The Straight Guy" on Bravo to name just a few.

Take me back to the days of Hee Haw, Bonanza, Hawaiian Eye, 77 Sunset Strip, The Roy Rogers & Gene Autry Shows, The Lone Ranger, Gunsmoke, Ozzie & Harriet, Leave It To Beaver, The Untouchables, The FBI, Hallmark Hall Of Fame, Ed Sullivan, & Ted Mack's Amateur Hour when there was no need for a V chip & nobody even knew what one was.
