I am of course new here. I look forward to dialogue with and among other brothers and sisters.

I am not certain where to post new topics &c. If anyone could help, I would much appreciate the help.

I do have questions and concerns on Bible versions. I'm sure a lot of people are bracing at that statement, but I do come in peace. :saint:

I have long used the KJV.

Recently my wife bought me (for Christmas 2010) a NASB R L Allan (she must loveth me!). I am not allowed to use it until Christmas day.

After a lot of looking at other versions, I settled on this one (I think). So I will begin using this version very soon, having a very old KJV that has worn out, and using the same version as my wife uses.

I personally have struggled making the switch, after reading KJV only-ists, arguments on the TR, that the Alexandrian texts are corrupt, all of this. Also, in the church where I was saved, we did use the KJV, but were not "only" and, only until attending Bible College I never had come into contact with this issue personally. When other found I was not KJV only, they distanced themselves. This was not by a large group, just by some in the College. Using the AV wasn't enough for them, it had to be taken to another level.

Of course I have been ostracised over this issue from brothers who say if I use another version, am not saved. You know the drill. I also, as a pastor, upon accepting a church in the past, was asked about "versions." I asked them to open their Bibles and see that they themselves don't use "the 1611" but another version, and said to them I will preach from this book, not about this book. That was not good enough, as a deacon, upon a day I was not there, told the church he doesn't care what I say, if you don't use the 1611 you're going to hell.

I have to say this KJV issue, the attitudes of some toward it and others has driven me away from this version and the stigma that surrounds it.

Again, I mention all of this to say that I still struggle with the switch to a certain extent, but not totally, and more over guilt somehow than any one main issue.

If any have words of encouragement, thoughts to help, Scriptures to help me above all and especially, I am ready to listen.

    Thank you.

    Welcome to Baptist Board!!

Your wife really MUST love you to get you an Allen Bible!! LOL My hubby has one in ESV from when he was ordained and I love to hold that Bible because it just feels so completely amazing. :) I think you will find the NASB to be a wonderful translation and one that won't be so unfamiliar to you but maybe a little more up to date than the KJV wording.

You can absolutely post in any of the rooms here except the private women's forum. I'm guessing you can post in the men's forum ;) but you'd need to ask for permission to enter. We have a translations section where you can ask questions from some very knowledgeable people here and while we may get strong with each other, pretty much most everyone here has some great words to say. :) We even have our very own Bible translator here!

So again, welcome to BB and I pray that we will be a blessing to you in your walk with Him.

Welcome! I for one think it's discrimination that we can't post in the gal's forum, but I'm not sure I'd either like or understand what goes on in there anyway!

Oh, you SO don't want to go there.

I mean there's talking of shopping, boys, private stuff - you know, all the things that boys HATE to hear about.

Welcome to the BB. I was raised KJV only and I understand the guilt trips if you do not follow the cookie-cutter mold of kjvo, skirts for women, no theater, etc. My advice? As long as you aren't deliberately offending others or living in blatant sin, ENJOY your freedom in Christ. There is something so refreshing, so liberating to come out of that rules driven lifestyle and realize God LOVES you and is not a mean old man sitting on a cloud ready to zap you with lightning if you step outside of some man-made boundary.

For me, I still use the KJV. All the verses I memorized as a child were from the KJV and I happen to like the old English. But, there are others who sit next to me in church and use other versions. Not a big deal. We are one in Christ.

    Thanks a lot MCDIRECTOR.

    I appreciate the welcome.

abcgrad, thanks very much for your post. Although I was never under any of the man made skirts, theater, shorts, haircut &c legalism (they used to even preach against wire framed glasses) through the Baptist church I was saved in, going through College, I ran into this legalism, was called a liberal by several pastors (as were others), ostracized by the "elite" and exposed to the hatred and slandering that comes from such if you don't follow their rules. My wife and I visited one of these churches recently, it was a walk back into antiquity and legalism, the same style of preaching that sickens me, as they take a platform text, and go on a rant and rage. I almost weep, even now, thinking about this. It, to me, is very sad and very heart breaking for many reasons. The thing that saddens me, is where is the spiritual growth, in growing in grace and in knowledge? I feel anyone can take a text at a whim and go on a rant, and call themselves a preacher. That's just my take.

Thanks for the reminder of freedom.

My child-teen years background was in a KJVO church. I'd heard all the arguments and simply accepted them without any critical analysis. Now in adulthood I've made a little study of the subject matter and found most, if not all, of the arguments lacking in conviction. The question that no one has ever answered adequately for me is: "Why are the Alexandrian Texts corrupt?" If you read the KJVO literature they state that as a given without ever establishing their argument (begging the question). Or they say, "because they are" (circular argument) or "because there were gnostics in Egypt" (guilt by association).

I must say that my comprehension of scripture has improved dramatically since I started reading the NKJV and the especially NIV (or as KJVO's call it, the "Not Inspired Version")

I've got to believe that you are finding this out for yourself as you read your new NASB. If you really study the KJV you will see that it is an archaic translation and can actually be a stumblingblock for new believers. If you need some examples of mistranslations, archaic words and phrases, and just downright hard to comprehend passages, I've been collecting them over the years. Let me know and I'll send you what I've got.

Ironically, I'm attending a IFB church now that uses the KJV. I get a silent chuckle every time the pastor stumbles on the outdated translation while reading verses. How useful for instruction is your Bible translation if you can't read it?

Anyway, a retroactive Welcome to BB, seeing as I've joined after you have.
