Help me get my library organized! lol

I have about two thousand books in my library, all classified according to the Dewey decimal system. It takes a lot of work, but I believe it is worth it in the long run. You might want to keep a handful of your favorite books near your computer desk: a dictionary; a good one volume Bible Commentary for quick and easy reference, Strong's Concordance, and perhaps a couple of others. The Dewey decimal system puts everything according to its own subject and topic anyway, so you are accomplishing the same thing in a more organized manner.
My wife was going to put or catalog it all on a database, which would be good for insurance purposes. But that again takes time and work.

READERWARE offers an excellent program for classifing your books (tapes, CD's and video).
You can download a copy and try it for free for a limited time before it reminds you that you need to eventually pay for the program, (which is about $40).

It's not totally painless process starting it though. In the absence of a scanner, you will have to locate and transcribe the ISBN numbers for each title into the system. The program then searches over the internet for the name, image and various statistics related to your book (title, author, price, current worth, publisher, copywrite, short review, rating, etc).

You can add a description of what room (or bookshelf) the title is located on too.

I know that there are freeware versions of similar programs that can be downloaded but I am unfamiliar with them.

If it would help, you could send books to me, that would allow you to have fewer books to organize and allow you to get it done faster

 

I have my language books together within easy reach. My commentaries are grouped by books of the Bible in order from OT to NT. All the other books are grouped by topic.

 

Best way is to organize by what you are going to remember ... Dewey Decimal will be nice if you will use a card catalog ...

Library of Congress system is more detailed, especially for specialized collections. They used it at the music college I went to, because with Dewey, almost everything would have been the same number, but with many decimal digits! Besides, don't they list the LOC number in the flyleaf of most books anyway?

 

Hey, loads of books already have a Dewey number on the copyright page. And if your book doesn't have one there are web sites where you can find out the correct number . . . Or even look up in an online library catalogue for similar books.

Hey, I've worked at two libraries.
I started doing Dewey with my nonfiction this last summer and got sidetracked because I moved. Hence my books are still at the parents' house . . . sigh.

 

I've got about 800 in my library and I've just done it by category. I've thought about using the Dewey system but haven't gotten around to it. I like the idea but will also check out the software program that was mentioned. Right now I could quickly find any book I'm looking for so I'm not sure if I want to go through the trouble.

How well does Dewey work? I remember it being less specialized than the Library of Congress system but for the numbers we're talking about, it probably doesn't make that much difference.

 

Goodness! You are ALL wrong! You have to organize into pretty colors with the biggest books in the middle with each side slowing going down in size.

Too many books for that. If I did it that way I'd never be able to find anything.

However, there was a kid in a book who organized his books by color, I think. I don't remember the title.

But I do have a few special stacks that are reserved for books I'm currently reading or books I just like to look at because they make me happy, or books that are a good read over and over again.

 

I was just wondering if Spoudazo's library is any more organised yet....
