My husband received some important documents (military) this morning in .tif format.

We have no way to open them. We also do not have PPS.

Is there anyway I could get them from .tif to .wps?

    Thanks!

If you have Windows, you ought to have a way to open them. First try right clicking on the file and see if you can select "Preview"

    If that doesn't work do:
    START==>ALL PROGRAMS==>ACCESSORIES==>PAINT

Then open the file using that program.

I don't have a 'preview' but I tried 'paint', 'wordpad' and 'notepad'. None of them worked.

I did see it on notepad and wordpad, but it was encoded so I still couldn't read it.

A .tif is an graphics file. You should be able to open it with any sort of image-manipulation software, such as PhotoShop or Adobe Elements. In Windows, you can also open it with a program called "Microsoft Office Imaging".

If you can't find that, you may want to Google for a free image viewer such as this.

A file with a .pps extension is a PowerPoint show. You can download a free PowerPoint viewer for Windows from Microsoft's Web site.

I have irFanview and could not get it open with that either.

Seems odd that this file would be a 'graphic' file as it is documents...

I don't have Microsoft Office. I only have Microsoft Works.

Is it a .tif file or a .pps file?
If it is a .pps file then follow Baptist Believer's instructions. To find out, select the file, right click, then select "properties" at the bottom.

If that doesn't work then I would say your file is probably corrupt.

If your husband is military then he should be able to get Microsoft Office free for home use. At least that's why my brother-in-law in the Army tells me.

My husband is a retired Navy Chief.

It is a .tif file. The subject line says file.tif. There is an attachment. We sent asking for some documents and this is how they were sent.

If you have a google account you can try forwarding them there then choose "View as a html file" after clicking on the attachment.

Dont know if it will let you do that.

.tif files are generally very large as compared to .jpg files (.jpg are compressed) My guess is that maybe they were too big for your ISP (or something) and became corrupt. Everything you have tried should have worked for a .tif file. Maybe try renaming it test.tif or something and see if you can open it. If that doesn't work, then I would ask them if they can send them again and/or in another format.(like pdf or jpg)

What is the file size? If it only a few 100kb or less then you likely did not get the entire thing. I would expect it to be several mb in size.

There are 3 files. They are 43kb, 68kb, and 655kb.

Roger, I don't have a Google account, but I can get one and try that. I gave all my gmail accounts away, so I don't have one for myself!!! How do I get one?

BTW, I have responded that I cannot get the files open and the Navy is sending them to me via hard copy.

I would still like to figure this out though.

Thanks so much for all your suggestions!

I just searched for all of my .tif files on my computer. If they are monotone, or low resolution pictures, then those files sizes are not unreasonable. The two smallest ones are consistent with the size of the black and white only .tif files I have and they are similar format of what I imagine a military document would look like. The larger one is consistent with something with low resolution pictures or something with very few colors.

I'm sticking by my corrupt file theory :D

You may very well be right. I guess I will just have to wait for the hard copies via snail mail to arrive.

I just did a search on my computer and I don't have any .tif files.

Invite sent - it is a pretty neat option that lets you see most attachements as a web page. Hope it works

Oops, didn't see this before I responded to you elsewhere!

Why not just ask them to send it to you in another format?

Roger: It worked! I sent it to gmail and have already printed all 25 pages out! Thank you!!!

Gina: The first thing I did was ask them to send it to me in another format. It's the government, you understand. They said they couldn't do that... [IMG]
