Here's the "Good News"!! All the books of the bible are for us to use today!

Everytime Jesus spoke, it was something to help us. He was either teaching us something, or showing us how to be better people, and sometimes He told us things not to do!

2 Tim 3-16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

There are some on this board that like to pick and choose which parts are for today. Well, the good news is that it's all for today.

To lead us and guide us and help us on our walk through this sinful world.

Praise be to God, He is able to keep us from falling.

Working for Jesus,

Tam

Keep in mind that the verses of 2 Tim 3:16-17 were written to refer to the Old Testament (the NT had not been known about, and many of the NT writings had not yet even been penned yet).

However, it is good and proper to consider the NT on the same level as the OT in regards to practical application of this verse.

Do you know the children's chorus:

"Every promise in the Book is mine;
Every chapter, every verse, every line..."

The children sing it, but in truth it tells a lie. The words are not true. All the promises of the Bible are not ours. All the books of the Bible are for us to use, to read, to study, for our edification, but its promises are not necessarily for us.

God said to Abraham:
Genesis 12:2-3 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
--That was a promise made to Abraham, not me. Every promise is not for me. I cannot appropriate that promise to myself. It was for Abraham and for him alone.

The Lord through Moses told Pharaoh that all of the firsborn of Egypt would die. That was a promise. I am glad that that promise was not for me. My firstborn is still alive. For that matter my land is not plagued with locusts, frogs, or lice. I am thankful that those promises were not for me. Not every promise in the Book is for me.

So also is the statement given in 1Cor.14:39 "Forbid not to speak in tongues" a statement not applicable to me (or anyone else on this board) either. If falss in the same category as the above historical statements. The promise of the spiritual gifts were given in a different century, in a different time (the apostolic age) for a different purpose. They are not for today.

Yes the Bible, every verse, every word of it is for us today. It is also our obligation to "rightly divide the word of truth," not to "wrongly butcher" it.

Well I believe what it says in Hebrews~

Heb 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

BTW, I wasn't aware of time limits on the promises.... so I'm gonna stand on them!

You didn't know that??
God promised to Moses that He would allow him to see His glory. He set him on a cleft of the rock where Moses was able to watch a part of God's glory go by.
That is what God promised to Moses, and He kept that promise.

Are you going to stand on that promise too?

There are many many verses in the Bible that do not apply to us Christians in the year 2006. God has always dealt with His people in the way he chooses. Lets look at the book Lev. and all the laws. Stoned anybody lately? Killed any Witches? How about killing your disrespectful children? Then we have the 70 that Jesus sent out to do a specific job at a specific time. Do we all have the "power" they did? Of course not. No, the Bible is God's Word to us but we need realize that the message is always for us but the application has varied for believers throughout all of time.

In Christ,

Yes, I believe all the promises! Why wouldn't I?

As I said, some scriptures are for teaching! Yes, God can show His glory and power if He wants to, anywhere and anytime He wants. To whom ever He wants. Even the nay sayers.

Shadrach, Maschach, and Abednego survived the fiery furnace, and I could too if God wanted me to!!

Joshua marched around Jericho and shouted and the walls fell down flat, and it could happen today if God wanted it too.

Moses once let the earth swallow up 20,000 people because they were committing sin in the camp, and God could do that again too if He wanted.

I think one of the problems is that it has been so long since some of you have seen a move of God, that you don't believe it could happen anymore.

What is it you believe in? Is it some words in a book? Or is the God that wrote that book?

Did you learn anything when you read those parts of the bible Brian? You should have, because thats what it was put in there for!

God wanted us to know about all the things that are in the bible for a reason.

And there is part of it that is for us today. We can't just choose the parts we like, we must use it as God wants us to use it!

Wake up church! Judgment day is coming and you do not want to be found wanting when you are weighed in the balance!!

There is a time coming on this nation which should bring you to your knees in repentance of not believing in the POWER of the living God.

Have mercy on them all Lord,

Tam

You can be sure that those verses were written long after Jesus taught what he did.

</font>[/QUOTE]DHK...........One of these days when Jesus comes back... just what do you think you'll see?

Matt 24:30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

How about this promise that Jesus talked about before he ascended into heaven?

49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

.....or was this just a promise for Paul only and does not apply for all of us?

2Co 12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness..........

The "principles" in the Bible apply to us today from Gen.1:1 to Rev. 22:21. How would we know how much God hares sin if it were not for the book of Leviticus.Would we know how Holy our God is if it were not for the Tabernacle in Exodus. That is the problem with some of you people. Everything you don't think applies to us today you just cut out, and here comes another watered down version of God's Word. 2Ti 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

When Jesus comes back at the Second Advent in all His glory with the holy angels, I will see just that. But I will never see what Moses saw. That was an historical event never again to be repeated. I will never experience what Peter, James and John experienced on the Mount of Transfiguration. I will never experience what the 120 experienced at the Day of Pentecost. These are all historical events. They will never again be repeated. Historical events do not repeat themselves. The Day of Pentecost is over. It does not keep on repeating itself. Those who think it does are in grave error.

Shilo is right. In the Old and New Testaments there are principles that we can learn. Paul says they are examples for us.

1 Corinthians 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

Paul had just mentioned the events of the Israelites passing through the Red Sea, their being sustained in the wilderness by eating manna from heaven, drinking water from a rock. God promised to provide for his children. There is a principle. But he never promised to miraculously make water spout forth from the rock nearby your house. These were written as examples for our adomonition.

Not every promise in the book is mine.
Not every chapter, every verse, every line.
They are not all applicable to me. I cannot claim all the promises of the Bible as mine.
And yet all the Bible does apply to me in some way that I can learn from its principles.

Can you be so sure of this? For arguments sake, think for a moment that God is omnitemporal. Someday in Heaven, if God wanted to take you back in time to witness all of the things you say you will never see, do you question whether He can or not?

Let us not be philosophical and not speculate about the hereafter. We have on this board people who are claiming promises in the Bible (Old Testament and New) which are not for them. That is not rightly dividing the truth. It is buthering the Word. There are certain portions of God's Word that are not applicable to us today. That point must be conceded. It cannot be argued. All Scripture is inspired, and it is profitable. True enough. Does anyone want to take the devil up on his promise: "Ye shall be as gods." Benny Hinn did. That is what he believes. He said: "We are all little gods running around on this earth." All the promises in the Bible do not apply to us. That fact cannot be overly emphasized.

This from someone who "counts words" instead of reading the text any time the text differs with her views.

This from someone who reduces the "66 books of scritpure" down to "some texts" in the "NT" and snippets of the OT as quoted in the NT.

By contrast the "Good News" statement in the OP would lead us to bevieve in a Bible that had 66 books!

Well said - but there are those here who turn a blind eye to any view that embraces the 66 books of scripture. God's Word that Christ said "CAN NOT be broken"!!

The cut-and-paste pick-and-choose model that some have when reading God's Word "that CAN NOT be broken" leaves them open to a great many forms of error.
