Allow me to explain: in most cities in the US, you can get 50-100 mbps via cable internet. In a lot of rural areas, like where I live, you're stuck with satellite internet speeds of around 10mbps; or, in harder to reach valleys, you're happy if you can get 5mbps. This is because we can't get the cable companies to extend cable to us without spending thousands of dollars out of our own pockets.

5mbps basically allows you to get email. 10mbps will let you watch some YouTube videos, but you'll most likely see buffering.

Depending on which stats you look at, the US ranks about 20th in the world for internet speed.

The FCC previously designated that a minimum speed for all Americans should be 25mbps; this proposal will drop that to 10mbps, automatically increasing the number of Americans who have "fast internet." In other words, a shell game.
