Too close to the truth to be "hilarious," yet too insulting to be useful.

Sometimes it's hard to know where to draw the line.

    And our favorite "drive-by poster" strikes yet once again. :rolleyes: {scowl}

If "Pastor Steven L. Anderson" were really interested (and ever actuallly got involved) in discussing some of what me - er I mean he, 'posts', I'm not sure 'the ol' ticker' could stand the shock! (again)

    Mr. Anderson,

Go back to smashing TV's and terrorizing children with your diatribes.

    One question....

Who in their right mind say "hip" and "with the times" when talking about modern music, in 2006?

Why do people feel it is not Biblical preaching if you are not screaming or pounding the pulpit :BangHead: ? Just once I would like to see someone try to explain it and also make sense. screaming and pounding does not bring conviction but the Holy Spirit does.

Calling this funny is an insult to essays that actually have humor in them.

Edited to add: I agree, flippo. Screaming and pounding a pulpit always seems like emotional manipulation, not preaching.

Because in the good old days (when the King James Bible is all that most English-speaking people had), churches and public meetings didn't have sound systems -- the preacher had to yell to be heard.

Since there's a certain subset around here that seems to be overly attached to the forms of religion from days gone by (shouting and the KJV), they hold to shouting preachers (now with sound systems so they can really blast you) and the KJV so they can hold on to the same Bible that their great-grandparents did.

Help me here. Was the spoof supposed to be about the liberal chuches or the fundamentalist churches?

Already read that one. I enjoyed the sermon on immigration more.

Appears the youngsters of to-day have a few lessons to learn. I grew up without sound systems, and I never yell. We learned how to project the voice in public speaking. Further, I have never pounded the pulpit, never shouted and I don't dance all over the platform either. Sorry to disappoint you.

    Cheers,

    Jim

I am reminded of the old story about the preacher who inadvertently left his manuscript on the pulpit. When someone came to clear up after him, she read the note pencilled in the margin: "Weak point, scream and pound the pulpit like crazy". Do we use rhetorical flourish to cover for our poor exegesis and application?

On the other hand, surely we do expect preaching to have passion in it and not just be a lecture on great truths. Phillips Brooks' definition of preaching as "communication through personality" suggests that if what we are speaking about is truly important to us, we will say it with a flourish and with the energy that always accompanies conviction. What we need to avoid is noise for the sake of noise.

Speaking of sound systems ... my pet peeve is preachers or singers who practically swallow the microphone and speak right in so that we can hear their breathing and listen to their teeth rattle!

A pastor who came as an interim for one month had such an impact on that church that I can still remember some of his sermons and the texts he spoke from, almost 30 years later. He had been a missionary for about 35 years. The man had tremendous conviction and passion. He never yelled. In fact he spoke in a quiet manner.

Too many pulpits are used a rah, rah sessions and demonstarte a clear picture of arrogance by propagating their opinion rather than the truth of God.

Because there is so little time to preach on Sunday, why should even a minute amount of time be spent on things that are not of eternal value.

You beat me to the point I was going to make rsr about Edwards preaching. I consistently run up against English majors who talk about his sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" as if it were delivered the way Billy Sunday would have. When I point out that it was most likely delivered in a mono-tone, they seem either shocked or get argumentative. The power is in the Spirit guided proclamation of the Word, not in the manner in which it is said.

This is not to say that homiletics and speaking effectively and properly should not be pursued, but rather that we remember where the true power resides. The old joke about the preacher's notes "weak point, yell louder" comes to mind.
