WASHINGTON (AP) -- Hispanics have surpassed blacks as the nation's largest minority group, the Census Bureau said Tuesday.

The Latino population grew to 37 million in July 2001, up 4.7 percent from April 2000. The black population increased 2 percent during the same period, to 36.1 million.

Hispanics now comprise nearly 13 percent of the U.S. population, which grew to 284.8 million in July 2001. That's up from 12.5 percent, or 35.3 million of the country's 281.4 million residents in April 2000.

Blacks make up 12.7 percent of the nation's population, up from 12.6 percent in April 2000. The black population grew by 700,000 in the 15 months after the census was released.

Whites remained the largest single population group, numbering about 199.3 million in July 2001, nearly 70 percent of all U.S. residents.

Asians are the next largest minority group after blacks and Hispanics, at about 12.1 million, or 4 percent of the population.

Living in an area where there is no majority ethnicity, I don't much care who in the nation has the biggest chunk of the pupolation. Is it really that important? I don't think it's important to God, so what's the prob???

AZTLAN is a movement to retake the lands of the western United States and return them to Mexico.
Grouping all hispanics in the US with AZTLAN is like grouping all whites in the US with the KKK.

Most Americans are caught up in their daily lives
Most non-white Americans are Hispanic Americans who are caught up in their daily lives.

I hate to use such harsh language, but the fact that you equate all hispanics with Mexico clearly shows ignorance that borders on racism. For the record, Hispanics in the US comprise of Mexicans, Argintinians, Guatamalans, Brazilians, Cubans, Costa Ricans, Panamanians, Ecuadorans, Hondurans, Peruvians, Venezuelans, and Chileans. Most of them are US citizens.

In addition to these nationalities, there are also Hispanic Californians, Tejanos, and Puerto Ricans, all of whom are US citizens by birth.

I doubt very highly that you'll find many Puerto Ricans involved in AZTLAN.

For the record, the site usborderpatrol.com is not run by the US government. The disclaimer in small letters states:

The contents of this site are privately managed and not subject to the direction or control of the United States Border Patrol.

It looks like the bulk of the site contains anti-Hispanic propaganda. I'd categorize the site as a semiracist activism site.

Whoa, Nellie! Who grouped all hispanics with AZTLAN? Not me! You did. I didn't equate all hispanics with Mexico. You jumped to a conclusion. (You'd be down right shocked at the nationalities of some of my closest friends. They aren't ALL WASPS! :D )

My reply was to your comment that you didn't care who had a big chunk of the population. I just pointed out one reason for some of the numbers.

BTW, WHAT I ALREADY KNEW: The US Border Patrol is a pro-active group which is concerned about protecting our porous borders and illegal immigration.

QUITE UNLIKE the US Government which is mandated by the U.S. Constitution to protect our borders and provide for the common defense, but doesn't care and in fact, actively promotes illegal immigration practices.

For someone who doesn't care about the issue, your button sure got pushed! [IMG] [IMG] :D [IMG] [IMG]

Interestingly, Donahue on MSNBC had this very topic on last night. AZTLAN was mentioned as well as the Reconquista Movement.

So, when I defend my Caucasian race, I'm now accused of being a racist? When, as an American, I'm angry over illegal aliens, I'm racist? When, as an American, I want English to be the national language, I'm racist? When, as an American, I want the military on our borders & illegal aliens deported, I'm racist? Fine. Some people blur the lines in this discussion. America is a great melting pot, but people used to assimilate when they came here. And they CAME HERE LEGALLY.

Wonder what the reception would be like if millions of GRINGOs crossed the SOuthern Border illegally and invaded Mexico? Would we be welcomed with open arms? Or would we be arrested & thrown in jail & deported? After all, a person with a little bit of money could have a really good life south of the border, I've heard. Real estate is cheap. You can afford servants for next to nothing. Of course, we would insist we speak English and keep all of our culture, too, and not assimilate.

If there are no ulterior motives here for influx ILLEGAL immigration, perhaps Mexico would like to become the 51st state. But Mexicans might have issues with that.

At the current rate, it is reported the US will only be 53% white by the year 2020. But NOTHING is more important than cheap labor & votes, it would seem. Not even national security.

The left says: "They take lower paying jobs Americans don't want."

If the right would say, "They can have all those jobs cleaning toilets & picking veggies," we would be called "racist."

Another hypocrisy. Other races defending their race is politically correct. Whites defending theirs is called "racist." Spare us.

You make it sound like whites not being a majority in the US is something that is of concern. Please please PLEASE tell me this is not how you really feel.

No differently than if a bunch of Caucasians illegally invaded Mexico, refused to speak Spanish, refused to take siestas during the work day, and insisted on eating only American fast food. Or worse yet, kosher. [IMG] Oh, I forgot about the free health care issue, too.

Let's just make Mexico the 51st STATE and solve all the problems. How big do you think that idea would fly south of the border? [IMG]

Heaven forbid someone actually speak their own language and eat the kind of food they grew up eating! If God sent you as a missionary to a non-English-speaking country, would you never again speak English, drink Coca-Cola, eat barbecue, etc.?

Actually I have been to a non-English speaking country. The difference we are talking about here is illegal residence in a country. Missionaries have to go through a lot of paperwork to get visas, innoculations, and be cleared by our government as well as the "host" government of the country they are going to.

Also the purpose of missionaries vs illegal aliens is quite different.

A missionary's income comes from support sent from home. Not usually from the "host" country. A missionary usually has health insurance or some other means to have health care needs met. Not FREE healthcare provided by the "host" country.

Bottom line - missionaries are there LEGALLY. And there aren't MILLIONS of them in the country, either.

The thread is about minorities and the U.S. population. According to your profile, you don't live in the U.S., so what's your beef?

Oh, I'm sorry, I thought the issue was that you think we have too many Hispanic people in the US.

Illegals. Or "UNDOCUMENTED WORKERS" as liberals like to call them. No matter where they're from, but the thread is about Hispanics.

BTW, where were you a missionary & for how long?
