John Adams, our second president and the father of our sixth president, made two very important decisions that had a major impact on our country. One was his nomination of George Washington as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army; the second was his appointment of Thomas Jefferson to write the Declaration of Independence.

What three reasons did Adams give Jefferson why Jefferson should write the Declaration of Independence instead of Adams?

One was that nobody liked Adams because he was pompous.

Would assume #1 would be Jefferson being from Virginia and Adams from Massachusetts.

Who would want yankees to write it when good slave-holding southerners were available to write "All men are created equal."

In a letter from John Adams to Timothy Pickering. August 6, 1822

The committee met, discussed the subject, and then appointed Mr. Jefferson and me to make the draught, I suppose because we were the first two on the list.
The subcommitte met. Jefferson proposed to me to make the draught.
I said, "I will not."
"You should do it."
"Oh! no."
"Why will you not? You ought to do it."
"I will not."
"Why?"
"Reason enough."
"What can be your reasons?"
"Reason first - You are a Virginian, and a Virginian ought to appear at the head of this business. Reason second - I am obnoxious, suspected, and unpopular. You are very much otherwise. Reason third - You can write ten times better than I can."
