The London Confession of Baptist Faith, Chapter XXVI
    Of the Church

IV. The Lord Jesus Christ is the Head of the church, in whom, by the appointment of the Father all power for the calling, institution, order, or government of the church, is invested in a supreme and sovereign manner;[7] neither can the Pope of Rome in any sense be head thereof, but is that antichrist, that man of sin, and son of perdition, that exalteth himself in the church against Christ, and all that is called God; whom the Lord shall destroy with the brightness of His coming.[8]

    7. Col. 1:18; Matt. 28:18-20; Eph. 4:11-12
    8. II Thess. 2:2-9

    Let the debating begin! [IMG]

You won't reconcile it with contemporary, post-modern influenced thought in the church.

However, the RCC does set the Pope up as the earthly representative of Christ. So they do make him an anti (instead of) Christ.

I doubt that he is the singular manifestation of "that man of sin, and son of perdition." And we have many people of all stripes who exalt themselves in the church against Christ.

I believe the pope to be a false prophet/teacher like those we are warned about in 2 Peter and other scriptures. The Pope and his church will led many astray with their false doctrines- especially those concerning the means of salvation.

Our church follows the 1689 London Baptist Confession with a couple minor updating of words.

Use "an antichrist" (as per I John) and not "that antichrist".

He certainly IS an antichrist. Well, not at the moment. He's in hades torment awaiting the Lake of Fire at the Great White Throne. But a new "vicar of Christ" will be anointed soon who will continue the way of antichrist.

Good thoughts. I was more or less just making sure I wasn't off the deep end in agreeing with the assessment. I was fearful of someone getting overly upset about it though.

The London Confession of Baptist Faith is ofcourse un-Biblical at this point. We have a rather straightforward definition of the term anti-Christ in the bible. It only shows up in John's epistle's (which the London confession don't seem to cover when talking about the subject).
Denial of the fact that Jezus is the Christ and that Jezus has come into the flesh are part and parcel of what makes somebody an Anti-Christ. Whatever may be wrong with any given pope none of them has ever done that.

</font>[/QUOTE]it is obvious that the popes follow a different jesus and they are not even loyal to the different jesus that they try to please. do you think that the pope was believing in the biblical Jesus that doesnt accept sacraments as a path to heaven?

That is why the proper use of "Anti-christ" refers to the Son of perdition. The LCF is referring to that "spirit of anti-christ", not the actual individual, as the capitalization denotes.

To answer the question; you don't reconcile anything with modern thought, you corrupt it.

There were and are many anti-christs' in the world. The pope is just a blatant example of a Judas goat leading the flock to slaughter.

The word anti-Christ means "instead of Christ". The Pope stands as the "vicar" of Christ, that is the substitute for Christ... he is instead of Christ... anti-Christ.

I am not insinuating he is necessarily THE anti-Christ.

When Scripture uses the title "the man of God" (e.g. 2 Tim. 2:37), it is not referring to a particular man, but a man who holds that office. Likewise, the man who occupies the Papacy (the office of the Pope) is "the man of sin."

I can believe that a Baptist board would run somebody off for denouncing the Papacy because more Baptists are headed toward Rome any how.

I think that the ultimate state of someone who has been brainwashed with catholic theology all of their life is not able to be certainly decided by us and is best left in the hands of God.
