Hobby & Moral/Spiritual Question

well, here's my 2 cents since you asked for it

since christianity does not condemn all violence, i think that would be a bad reason to stop making war models.

of course if in any way you feel it's sinful you should abstain.

Model-building can be a very relaxing and satisfying hobby. For better or worse, about 90 percent of all models are either military items or automobiles. If you don't like to build cars, your choices are limited.

I'm a model-builder who occasionally builds military models (though I lean more towards space ships and monster models). I've often wondered the same thing about my desire to build monster models. I guess I feel comfortable with it since what attracts me to it isn't any form of evil associated with the genre, but rather the historical links to cinema and literature.

I see military models the same way -- an attraction to the violence and destruction of war is bad, but an attraction to the historical and other aspects is not necessarily bad. After all, there are a lot of current service personel and combat veterans who would abhor any form of unnecessary violence (having experienced it first hand), yet who are also avid military historians and model builders. My dad, for instance, is a retired army officer and he collects brass cannons.

We're commanded to abstain from evil, but adjured to become all things to all people. Building military models is not necessarily evil if doesn't darken your heart. Jesus needs model builders as well as painters, quilters, and golfers!

If it really bothers you, you could become a specialist and build ambulances and support vehicles As I'm sure you're aware, lots of companies are producing tank recovery vehicles, etc., having done most armored combat vehicles several times over.
