Holman Christian Standard Bible

I have the dictionary, and I do like it. I would like to get the Bible. Will see when it comes out.

I don't really have that problem now, but I teach the youth. Most use the NIV or the NKJV. I think Lifeway will switch to the HCSB when it is complete, they are already doing it for their bulletins. I don't think it will be bad. I have used the ESV a lot recently, but I have started giving the HCSB a look because there are a few things I have found as I study more that I don't like about the ESV. Thus far, I have been extremely impressed by the HCSB. I didn't want to use it at first because I felt people would shy away from it because of its ties to the SBC. However, it is very faithful to the Greek and makes some textual decisions that I really like, they don't strictly stick to the Critical Text, but seem to take the Majority text into account as well. I look forward to the whole Bible coming out, and am going to be researching it more and more.

I have been using the HCSB online at StudyLight.org for some time. In October I happened to be in a Lifeway store and I picked up a copy of the Experiencing the Word New Testament. I have been pleased with the HCSB so far. It just may become my preferred version, but that decision will not be made until I have had a chance to look at the Old Testament.

I don't think we should assume the HCSB will be the new Lifeway version of choice for literature and things. Lifeway and Holman are two different entities. The fact that a few references have shown up on bulletins isn't that telling. Lifeway may very well choose to adopt the HCSB exclusively. But I don't think they will unless the HCSB catches on a bit more.

I believe Broadman and Holman are part of Lifeway Resources. Look at Broadman and Holman's webpage.

Also, look on Lifeway's webpage. They are already calling the HCSB the new 'standard.' Crosswalk and other sites already use the HCSB as their default search Bible. And Lifeway will push the HCSB, probably much like Zondervan with the NIV. There will probably be a huge marketing strategy. I think it is safe to 'think' that Lifeway will use the HCSB, at least for a while, to try to get others to use it. Lifeway definitely has an interest in the HCSB.

I have liked the HCSB Psalms. The NT
is OK and I thought at one time that it
may become my number two translation.
But I don't think so. I consult it now
and then, but don't see myself adopting

True. But Lifeway sells and publishes KJVs, NIVs, NASBs, NKJVs, et.al. Lifeway will do what is in its best interest, regardless of what Holman thinks

 

Today, I have learned that Lifeway will now be including the HCSB in the majority of its new SS curriculum beginning in the Fall. It will either stand alone, or be alongside the KJV or NIV. Once again, Lifeway has made a dubious choice, one that may be regretted and/or amended in the future.

 

Personally, I don't know why anyone would choose the HCSB when the ESV has already been available. Right Tom?

 

Agreed. But there's a development regarding the HCSB and Lifeway SS literature that I learned of last week before leaving for vacation. I'll post when I get back and have more time.

 

I have been reading Paul's Epistles in the HCSB (which I bought for $1.75) and I like the way the paragraphs retain the logical flow from thought to thought. It feels kind of like reading the NKJV, but the textual basis is obviously different.

Many Lifeway (SBC) literatures will start
posting the HCSB = Holman Christian Standard Bible
instead of the NIV = New Internation Version
in Fall 2003 editions. A full HCSB is not
expected until the Spring of 2004.
