    Pop quiz:

Did or did not psychiatry play a prominent role in the eugenics movement of Nazi Germany, AND the eugenic thinking that was popular in the USA, at the same time, and resulted in mass sterilizations?

    yea or nay

Mass sterilizations? Yes. About ten times more in Germany than the U.S., but forced nonetheless in both places.

Don't know if psychiatry played a role, but the idea of natural selection did. Which, when forcing a selective breeding ...

....the breeding is neither selective (as in how Darwin saw it) nor natural. Ironic to me.

What the Nazis tried was quack science, and not even the biologists who adhere to Darwin's theory respect it. Why? When the state, and its bureaucrats, take the place of the couple in deciding who mates with whom, some genetic degeneration will occur. Bureaucrats are not matchmakers. Of course, Nazis thought that individuals weren't capable of knowing what was best for society, such that society's representatives needed to play matchmaker.

People were not meant to be bred like horses. To have continued to do so would have led to a lot of tall, attractive, defectives. Psychopaths, especially.

Here is a blog of someone's that describes some of the history. I suspect some of the info is from the Scientologists, but that doesn't discount its importance. As they say, "Out of the mouths of fools . . "

Today the USA has a large number of schoolchildren on drugs such as Ritalin and SSRI's. A lot of money is made by the medical / pharmaceutical complex. As for the future, I expect eugenics to have a comeback, as scientific knowledge about our DNA advances. Expect psychiatry to play a roll again. Does not history repeat itself?

    Here's that blog:

    Nevada ...

Your linked blog is an hysterical overreaction to a valid art in medicine known as psychiatry. Connecting Germany's insanity from the end of WWI to Hitler to the art of psychiatry is disingenuous at best, and a deliberate effort to discredit a necessary medicinal approach to mental illness at worst. It is a completely invalid criticism, born of tin-foil-hat conspiracies concentrating on evil plots and sinister shadow organizations that do not exist.

No. It is history. You read any criticism of psychiatry as condemnation of the entirety.

The field of mental health will always attract control freaks. Those who arrogantly think they can define "normal". Those who press their values on others under the guise of medicine.

While eugenics has been discredited, and American and European psychiatrists no longer entertain that notion, at least publicly, the personality type is still to be found in mental health. Controlling.

Freud's daughter said the most sophisticated defense mechanism she'd ever seen was that of psychoanalyst.

I won't even begin discussing the way drug companies influence psychiatry.

Did you read the little bio off the right of the page at the bottom? She's a Scientologist. They view psychiatry as a barbaric and corrupt profession. She writes of true historical facts, but subtly colors her comments to paint psychiatry as responsible, not the quacks who practiced it for Hitler. So what makes you think she doesn't have an agenda in writing that claptrap?

    An attitude runs through psychiatry

You admit the history shows an involvement of psychiatry with eugenics! That's a start.

Yes, from the sterilization of thousands of Americans, some merely poor, to the mass murder of Europe, psychiatry was THERE. Today, there is still a presence in the ranks of psychiatry of persons who

seek to control others and limit the freedom of others
see dissent, rebellion, heresy, and the questioning of authority as anti-social
suffer from their own mental impairments

Do we not all know this already? I think it is common knowledge among the common people.

Believers of Scientology are far from the only ones skeptical of psychiatry. Take a look at this well written article, which speaks of a link between the past and the present:

Did not the Japanese also participate in human experimentation on the Chinese after the invasion of Manchuria ?

And the medical industry can easily be used for bad, too. Doesn't make medical science wrong.
Actually, from what I'm told we learned a lot about the human body from the cruel "experiments" the Nazis did on their prisoners, unethical and wrong as they were.

At the risk of sounding racist, this is essentially what slave owners did to black people. They bred them like cattle. Got a big strong male? Make him a stud. That's why many of the physical sports are dominated by black people today. Because whites bred them to be bigger, faster, and stronger, while they themselves were matching up based on class instead of genetics.

But we do this today....with the mentally limited or whatever the pc term is. Regrettable as it is our society also aborts the unwanted child as well.

History, may indeed point an accusatory finger at our civilisation as barbaric .

As a nurse I participated albiet in a 2nd hand way on drug testing..with I believe participants but no-one asked me...and as I was in front of the telemetry monitoring heart asystole events , the project could not be stopped fast enough...these asystolic events were of very short duration...seconds but still.

Mental health patients were and possibly still are used as drug dose experimental subjects, particularly those who are involuntary inpatients
