I've noticed so much lately how easy it is to slander God's holy name, and recently I've heard my kids do it. I kind of just blew it off and tried not to think about it. But it's a disgusting thing to do.
Here's a few sentences from the book The Holiness of God by RC Sproul. Please think about them.
" His name is holy because He is holy. He is not always treated with holy reverence. His name is tramped through the dirt of this world. It functions as a curse word, a platform for the obscene. That the world has little respect for God is vividly seen by the way the world regards His name. No honor. No reverence. No awe before Him."

That is very true Gina- and I will admit I even do it everyonce in a while without meaning to. And it isn't even seen as wrong anymore like swearing is still considered "wrong". If someone uses God's name in vain its considered as perfectly normal. Who ever posted "Why should God bless America"- I have to agree- why should he bless the sins of this society?

    Until Next Post, Adam

That is so true, it pains me too hear it. They don't know or want to reconize how wonderful and holy He is.

Two short glimpses of heaven, and what do we see in each - the HOLINESS of God echoing down the corridors of glory!

He is the thrice-holy God. He is not "Loving, loving, loving Lord God almighty". He is HOLY, HOLY, HOLY. The primary controling attribute is His HOLINESS. It defines His love, His mercy, His longsuffering, etc.

Fill your hearts with the meager words describing our HOLY Lord: <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.

And they were calling to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory."

At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.

"Woe to me!" I cried. "I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty."<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>There before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian. A rainbow, resembling an emerald, encircled the throne.

Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads.

From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. Before the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits of God. Also before the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal. In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back.

The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under his wings. Day and night they never stop saying: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come."

Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne, and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say: "You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being."<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

It hurts me to hear God's name used in vain. I try to ignore it, but I can't. I actually feel pain.

    Gina,

Ya know, God placed a conviction on my life some time ago now on the word Holy and how freely I used it to say such things as "holy cow" or holy **** ,,,,well you get the idea.

The fact is, God spoke to me about this and brought to my mind and heart of what I associate holy with and holy to me is sacred and describes God so why would I use the same word that I believe describes God to describe **** or anything else? I am not trying to place a guilt trip on anyone else, this is something that I was specifically brought to awareness on in my own life, sort of a check in my spirit so I had to change that part in my life and start to be careful of how I used that word.

I'm glad someone posted on this subject...it's something that has always bothered me. To use the Lord's name in my house would have resulted in immediate action! That rule was ingrained in my mind from the time I was a small, small child. To this day, I cannot and would not use the Lord's name in this way...I have a friend who is still lost and she always uses Gods's name this way and it makes me feel ashamed for her, and sad for God!! How people connect God's name with cursing is beyong me. I know it sounds silly but I couldn't say those words and then not move out of the way in anticipaiion don't wanna be dtanding there when lightening strikes!!

I never thought about the use of holy as being wrong. I have rarely ever in my life used theses phrases, but I have not thought it wrong for others to use them. Sue, thank you for bringing it to my attention.

That was so cool how the postings stopped at seven!
Too bad I ruined it now, but I figured that whenever I see what seems to be a way of disrespecting God's name on this board I'll bring this back to the top.....

Ya know folks, we're focusing on one area here, & there are other ways to take our Lords name in vain. Take for example... if we pray, asking for something, & not believing we're going to recieve it, then we're using His name in VAIN

    Amen preacher!

Yesterday on of my coworkers said "Jesus Christ" in response to something she didn't like. When I told her she should not be taking the Lord's name in vain, she replied that it wasn't in vain as she didn't attach it to a curse word. My response was that if you didn't use His name in praise than you were taking it in vain.

Is this the way most non-christians think of using the Lord's name, I hope not.

May we call upon the name of God in Praise of Him, and to bring Glory to Him.

Yes, God's convicted me of that recently too, just in the last year or so. I used to say H*ly Cow all the time, and I've stopped now.

Sue, I'm glad to know someone else understands. [IMG]

Even on television they are now taking the Lord's name in vain. And everybody in this country wonders why we are on a downward spiral. I here the Lord's name in vain at work at least 50 times a day. It is getting to be the "popular" thing to do.

God alone is holy, and yes there are to many
times in a day that we hear people use his name in vain.
The Left behind video that came out last year
used the Lord's name in vain, and would not
retract it, they said it was the best word
they could use to portray and unbeliever.
I told them that it is not the charater in the movie that said it it was the writers
and they will answer to the Lord for it.

Matthew 24:4 And Jesus answered and said unto them,Take heed that no man deceive you.

What do you think of people saying things like "g-sh", "g-e", such as that? Would that be another method of disrespect?

    Gina,
To take the Lord's name in vain, is to incur a rebuke from me. Be it gentle or sharp depends on the situation. Regardless, I will not tolerate it without comment in my presence.
As for other slang words, I believe they are simply a substitute for the "real" curse words and therefore the same as using the curse word you are substituting for. An indirect way of censoring yourself, so to speak. And if you're censoring yourself, well it must be wrong, eh?
My mindset is...what's wrong with language deprived of cursing and slang? Are we so incompetent at our own language that we can't be colorful any other way? I actually have people take notice that I never curse or swear. How strange is that? I always notice when they do.
    Good topic Gina

When I have heard people use the Lord's name in vain I would tell them not to use it. The look on their face is priceless. They know that it is in vain. We do not watch TV anymore because of the use of the Lord's name in vain and to many programs of the homosexuality (out of the closet)acceptance.

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. Revelation 4:8b

Before I started my walk with the Good Lord, I'll have to admit that I swore a lot. When I tried to break my self it was hard, but I managed. I don't know that I went about it the right way but sometimes the Good Lord has a way of turning things into something good. When I stoped swearing I substuted, "Bless your heart". Sometimes I said it in a way in which there was no doubt that a blessing was not what I had in mind. I truly think (now) that I was cursing as much then as when I said a curse word. But someting happened to MY heart. The more I said "Bless your heart" the more I began to think of the Good Lord. He was Blessing my heart more than I understood. Now I never say that unless I truly mean it. Like when one of our elderly at church tells me when they had a bad week because of their health, I will respond "Bless your heart". Now I don't cuss. Even when I hurt my self, my automatic response is not cussing. I have learned to say "hurt". When I kick the furniture I often end up saying "hurt, hurt, hurt". That is simply a way to express the pain and when the "sharp" pain goes way I pray "Thy grace is sufficent unto me." The Lord works in wonderful ways.
