Home Schooling through all 12 grades

    We did not start out intending to homeschool and we never said we would stick with it through all 12 grades.

    But that is what we ended up doing. Each year we prayed about it and said that we would stop this year if it was not working.

    Our two daughters graduated from homeschool - got scholarships to a public university known for engineering (NCSTATE) and graduated with honors in Engineering CompSci.

    They also started a student Christian fellowship club while attending the university.

    That's great!! I admit my big girls went to the public high school and it's looking very likely that my son will as well (he's in 8th now). If God shows us otherwise, I'm happy to continue with him home but I think our high school has some great opportunities since he's into engineering and they even have robotics classes. I know we could do stuff on our own but I'm feeling the right choice is to send him. He's ready, I believe.

    But both my daughters were home schooled from 1st or 2nd grade through 8th and then went to the high school. My oldest is now a teacher (subbing for now until she gets a full time job) and my second one is a senior in college, aiming to go to grad school next year for her doctorate in audiology. :)

    Congratulations Bob, I am so happy for you.

    Yes it sounds like you did a good job. The evidence is plentiful that properly homeschooled children often excel at public universities.

    We homeschooled our children different years. My oldest was homeschooled from 5th to 10th grades. He now has an associate’s degree from a local public community college and is working on his bachelor’s degree in Art school.

    The key thing I liked in your post was you said
    That is what my wife and I did. We did achievement tests every year, and always said that if we were not getting results we would do something else. When the high school classes got too difficult for us to do at home and we felt we were not giving them what they needed we mainstreamed them.

    For too many people around us, even some in the local homeschool group, homeschool is just code for no school. They are not doing the work and their children will suffer. I know many homeschoolers who are doing a great job, but for every one I know doing it right I know another that isn’t. I believe that is still their right, it’s their children, but I do worry about some of the kids.

    We were always under an umbrella group - usually run by a local Christian church and every year all the kids in the homeschool group had to take tests. What is more the state came out to audit the group every few years (Maryland) so I did not hear of a single case where homeschool was in fact "no school" because you could not get buy with that at the end of even one year of it.
