.....The crime is the first "honor killing" this year in Jordan, where many men consider sex out of wedlock to be an almost indelible stain on a family's reputation. On average, about 20 women in the country are killed by their relatives in such cases each year. Women have been killed for simply dating.
Global human rights organizations have condemned such killings and appealed to King Abdullah II to put an end to them.
In response, the government has abolished a section in the penal code that allowed for "honor" killers to get sentences as lenient as six months in prison. Instead, the government has told judges to consider honor killings on a par with other homicides, which in Jordan are punishable by up to 15 years in jail.
But attempts to introduce harsher sentences have been blocked by conservative lawmakers who argue that tougher penalties would lead to promiscuity.

    Yes, because they need help.

Know what else we are doing. We are trying to help criminals in jails change. Are you sugesting that we should not help people who need to change. I am glad that the Lord took mercy on me when I need help.

It wasn't all that long ago since we routinely gave lesser sentences for "crimes of passion".

In some of the United States, as little as forty years ago, a husband was not even charged if he killed his wife's lover and/or his wife.

I don't know if the people who made that possible were Muslims, but I suspect they weren't.

No need to go back quite that far.

1975 - All 50 states upheld a "Marital Rape Exemption". A man could not be prosecuted for raping his wife because it was not considered possible. Not possible in the sense that a woman's right to give her consent was revoked upon marriage. These laws could be traced to the mindset based on 17th century pronouncements by Micheal Hale, Chief Justice in England. In other words, under the law, husbands had conjugal rights and wives had conjugal duties.

1995 - Only 17 states had abolished the Marital Rape Exemption.

Even though in 2007, all 50 states have, to some degree, abolished the Marital Rape Exemption, not all of them punish spousal rape with the same weight as non-spousal rape nor is spousal rape always prosecuted the same way.

I encourage you to investigate your own state's laws about spousal rape. You may not like what you see.

Some states carry only 18 months prison time for spousal rape. Some states can only prosecute spousal rape if the wife has serious and visible bodily harm, was forced at gunpoint or knife point, or was tied up or handcuffed. These same states only require lack of consent for non-spousal rape cases.

Some states can reduce spousal rape to a misdemeanor if the offender will seek counseling.

Some states carry probation and suspended sentences for spousal rapes and not for non-spousal rapes.

Some states have only a 30-day window for spouses to report being raped while allowing several months to a few years for non-spouses to report.

Changing the legislation is very difficult because of the mindset of the loss of consent when a woman is married. Unfortunately, the following statements are examples of such difficulty in changing the way a society believes.
    • "If a woman claims that she has been raped by her husband, she has not been properly bedded." Maine Legislator
    • "Tougher laws might be used by an angry spouse to get a leg up in a divorce. If there's only two witnesses, it's so easy to lie." Rep. Frank Buck D-Dwellton, TN (2005)
    • "But if you can't rape your wife, who can you rape?" Senator Bob Wilson, Dem. California (1979)
    • "@$#% it! When you get married, you kind of expect you're going to get a little sex." Senator Jeremiah Denton, Rep. Alabama (1981)
    • "It's a waste of the court's time to get into that area...a woman who is in marriage is presumably consenting to sex. Maybe this is the risk of being married, you know." Charles Burt, President, Oregon State Barr (1979)
    *************************************

Great strides have been made in abolishing the Marital Rape Exemption laws, but not all spousal rape laws are compatible with non-spousal rape laws. Further progress is much needed.

    *************************************

My heart breaks for the Jordanian woman who was murdered by her father as an honor killing.

These things have been happening for literal centuries and aren't going to easily change. Please note that I am not comparing honor killings with ridiculous spousal rape laws.

Of course, Christianity isn't vicious, even though this goes on in a country ruled by Christians. It merely means that a lot of Christians aren't living up to our religion.

Kinda like things elsewhere in the world.
