Republicans are not concerned about your safety. Great timing, right after the disaster near Philadelphia.

Within a day of an Amtrak derailment that killed at least 7 people and injured many others, a House committee voted Wednesday to slash funding for the railroad service, over objections from Democrats.

The House Appropriations committee rejected multiple amendments to the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Bill that sought to increase funding for Amtrak. The bill cuts the rail service's funding to $1.14 billion, down $251 million from its current level. Democrats offered amendments to raise that funding to the $2.45 billion requested by President Barack Obama, but Republicans rejected the measures, arguing that increasing Amtrak's funding without cutting spending elsewhere would put the legislation above spending caps and threaten to kill the whole bill.

House Panel Approves Transportation Bill That Would Cut Amtrak Funding

....Republicans said increasing Amtrak funding without finding offsetting cuts elsewhere would cause the bill to exceed spending limits. Going above spending caps would have prevented the bill from coming to the floor, a GOP committee aide said.

“What we saw last night is a tragedy that we have to do everything we can to make sure doesn’t repeat itself, but we do not know the circumstances,” said Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R., Fla.) “The concept, however, that it is always, no matter what, more money that is the solution is not always the case.”

Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers (R., Ky.) said the Amtrak funding included “no cuts in safety or anything related to preventing a wreck,” but said a bipartisan budget deal likely would be needed for Congress to be able to pass spending bills before the next fiscal year starts on Oct. 1.

Too little , too late. The PR damage is already done. Somebody should have had sense enough to know that such a vote right now was just a bad idea.

They can say that the funding wasn't about safety. But all the American public is gonna hear is that 8 people are dead in a Philadelphia Amtrak wreck and the GOP led Congress is cutting their funding.

How can more boondoggle for the worthless Amtrak system compensate for an engineer going 100 MPH in a 50 MPH zone?

The engineer should be charged with criminal neglect.

The Democrats want to cash in on every death to get a new federal program and more power for themselves.

This instance proves once again that Democrats do not care about human suffering but only power for themselves.

Finally, if rail passenger service were so wonderful, business people would be rushing to establish rail passenger service.

Instead, we find out that the peak period for rail passenger service was the 1940s and traffic has declined since except for the east coast commuter trains that are taxpayer subsidized. Travelling by rail was replaced in the 1950s by automobiles and airplanes. Many railroads went bankrupt and the right of ways for the railroads were abandoned.

Those of you who remember passenger trains know that they were slow, dirty, lousy food and expensive. Amtrak is even worse than the old luxury trains and even the old everyday trains.

Another problem with trains is that it is difficult to guarantee their security against terrorist attacks.

Chicago politics at its finest. Crabby investing time in those kind of dishonest politics is contrary to scripture.

How would money have helped? Was the engineer too short and unable to reach the brake, so they need to tie bundles of cash to his feet?

Uh, nothing I said ties Jesus to GOP politics. However he has no trouble tying Him to his politics

Amazing how GOP apologists skip and dance and defend positions that are not defensible. We all know the GOP does not care about the living, other than the super rich. But you would think anyone calling themselves a Christian would care.

Even a devastating and deadly derailment didn’t soften Republican hearts Wednesday on the issue of Amtrak funding.

As bodies were pulled from the site of the tragedy in Philadelphia, GOP members of the House voted to slash funding for the rail service by $252 million.

The 30-to-21 House Appropriations Committee vote came along party lines over loud objections by Democrats.

The government should never have been in the railroad business in the first place.

So you have nothing other than DNC talking points. I see you cleverly (not really) avoided the article showing that there is a legitimate reason to take this vote. Not surprising that you avoid facts and rely on your assigned talking points.

The government should never have been in the railroad business in the first place.

It's mostly rich east-coastl liberals who ride the train discount on our dime, along with union workers that keep Amtrak $Billions in the red.

That, coupled with the fact that the UNION driver was going over 100 in a 50 mph zone…..

This O/P is some hateful ignorant stuff.

And as usual, he is supported by his clique.

I support this move by the republicans, and want the fat cats who say they have to travel back & forth between Boston and DC in the age of global warming and internet connection to start paying for it themselves.

In fact, this goes a long way to show the libs don't even believe their own BS over climate change.

Hypocrites.

Nothing in Article I, Section 8 says anything about giving the government the authority or responsibility to be in the railroad business.

AMTRAK is a terrible money loser and should have been defunded and privatized long ago.

Whatever made you think it was the responsibility of the Republicans to look after our safety in the first place?

And, for that matter, why should my Congressman, who was elected by the people of my state, to represent the people of my state, vote to send our money to other states?

That's a start, at least they're headed in the right direction.....
Now, if we can get them to defund every last penny from the Black hole which is AMTRAK we will have arrived.
