Does your name have a traditional spelling, or do you have to help people pronounce it?

Or is it just a name you feel is unfortunate?

I have to grin at some of the names and spellings people come up with. The most frustrating yet was a set of identical twins with names spelled the same, but different pronunciations. It upset them if you called one by the other name, but, um, they were identical?

I've had people come whisper to me to use just their initials, or a middle name, because the first name is uncommon except in books or cartoons, or typically given to the opposite gender.

So how about you? Are you common, uncommon, common with a creative spelling, or somewhere in the middle?

Were you kind when you named your own children?

My parents decided it would be interesting if our initials were all DAD. It was easy for the first one and a bit more challenging by the time they got to me the fourth and last child. My first name is Dwayne - not Duane or Dewayne. Most folks find it challenging saying my first name and last name together. They usually comes out Dwayne Dwand. Probably explains why they just call me padre.

The kids, on the other hand.... Joshua, Aaron and Rebecca. I wanted to name Joshua Zebulon after Zeb Pike who located Pike's Peak. We lived in Colorado at the time. Good sense and my wife over ruled the tribute. Becky's middle name is Rae as a nod to her maternal; grandfather Ray.

My maternal grandfathers have used the same two names for generations. Grandpa was Wilhelm Jakob. It was changed to William Jacob at some point in his youth. His father was Jakob Wilhelm whose father was Wilhelm Jakob whose father was Jakob Wilhelm. They were Prussian Jews.

Well, you can't mess up my name other than wanting to add an "e" which many people do. Nope - just plain old Ann. :)

What is even better is my maiden name was Smith. Yep - Ann Smith. NEVER had issues with that! LOL

Now my last name is Snider and people never pronounce it right. It's pronounced just as it is spelled - not Schnider which is how most people pronounce it. It's OK. I pretty much ignore it as long as they are speaking nicely about me!

Sweet Ann, my middle name is Ann with an E! My sisters are Belinda and Sheridan, not many Sheridans around, I spelt and pronounced my name until adulthood, it is fairly common, but I claim to be the eldest heheh. Charles is a family name, never ever Chuck! Although Charlie is ok. Most of the more recent names were good non Irish Catholic names ( this was stipulated by Pop when naming their sons. Mums side had Prussian names, Heinrich, Freidrich, Hugo , Augusta etc.

    My name is pretty common.

My first name was for my paternal grandfather, Thomas William Cassidy.

My middle name was for my great uncle, Paul (Pablo).

And, of course, Cassidy comes from the Irish Gaelic "Casaide" meaning "curly-haired" which is not an uncommon trait in Ireland.

My family comes from the town of Derrygonnelly in County Fermanagh in the Lake Country of what is now Northern Ireland.

My dad (or me da as we used to say) immigrated to this country in 1924 at age 14. He had just over a dollar in his pocket. And he died a very wealthy man. Is this a great country, or what? :D

I don't know much about Ireland, except the butter I buy from there is the best!

Coming over here with no money and succeeding? I had an immigrant, who came in the nineties, tell me the American dream does not exist anymore. He was working 6-7 days a week, sometimes sixteen hours a day, living frugally, and said taxes made it impossible. Even when he got a house, he was surprised by property taxes, taxes on fixing it, costs of maintaining the public sidewalk and trees in front of it, rules on grass length and fines if he was working too much to cut it before they came (the city checked everyone once a week) and all that jazz. And health insurance is basically impossible for legal immigrants for years.

Guess it's a different world now for many, though some definitely do still come and do great.
