Does your church read, or say in unison the Lord's Prayer (so called) each Sunday?

The church I'm attending right now has responsive reading each Sunday.

Sometimes our Pastor will have us read a scripture together during his sermon but not very often.

We do have a scripture of the month that we say together every service.

We also have a chorus of the month that is scripture and we sing it every service before we shake hands and greet our visitors and each other.

No, we do not. I have tried responsive readings during our services with little participation.
We had a visiting pastor come and asked the congregation to stand during the reading. The church hesitated and did not know what to do. They were confused.

I'm afraid that more than half would not be able to say the Lord's Prayer. I have often thought I would print it in the bulletin and use it as a benediction.

Because of the variety of English translations of God's Word, we would be hard pressed to have every read ANY passage.

Twice a month we do a passage from the extensive selection in our hymnal. And usually about once a month we have a time of "pastoral prayer" booked into the service - and I often close it with the Lord's Prayer.

Every week seems liturgical and not my type of baptist. But I would not be opposed to doing it that way if a church had such a routine.

Yep, our church does it weekly. I really dislike it. It does seem liturgical. I dislike doing it because people in the audience have little or no understanding of the meaning of the prayer. I dislike it because I don't think public recitation of the prayer is the purpose for which it is given. I dislike it because it does seem like a vain repetition. On the other hand, I am new in the church and this isn't the biggest issue we need to tackle so I'm leaving it alone for the moment. Actually the church has a whole series of "movements" they go through in a worship service (standing, sitting, praying, reading) which are done without thought by the old-timer and which totally baffle newcomers. Newcomers are never sure what they should be doing, when to do it, or why. The Old-timers know what and when, but they don't know why either!!! :D It is a challenge to conduct a service in which people are really engaged in meaningful worship. Part of that has to do with the heart of the people, but some of it rests with leaders. If we get lax and cease being creative, we create a set of rituals that are repeated but whose meaning is lost over time. I advise all of us pastors to go visit another church, go to a conference, talk to some other pastors, and do something different in your service. Don't let church become a dull routine.

How is this for different - several years ago I did the morning service backwards - sermon first - then singing and the rest of the AM service. [IMG]

We don't, but I would like it if we did.
Many churches, like mine, that don't say it, want to avoid "vain repetition". Yet I hear almost word for word weekly the same offertory and benediction prayers, and no one else seems to think that is "vain repetition".

"Lord, we thank You for the many blessings You have bestowed upon us. Bless the gift and the giver as we return a portion." Or something VERY similar.

Our church doesn't do that, but we do it as a family at least 2 times a week or so...it is good for the children to learn it as we say it a lot. Repetition helps when memorizing any scripture. We enjoy memorizing as a family.

Our youth groups memorize books in the Bible as they study them and they recite them in church sometimes. They have memorized the book of James and 1st John. I'm sure they have practiced week after week to be able to do this. So,there is something to say for repetition.

It would be fine to say the Lord's prayer weekly in worship service.

I personaly am a Liturgical Baptist and think it would benefit Baptists to confess their faith in unison in worship through such great confessions as The Apostle's Creed, Nicene Creed or confess portions of historic Baptist confessions and catechisms. It is only vain if your heart is not set on Christ. Personaly I would like a Baptist version of the Book of Common Prayer [IMG] [IMG] printed, Oh, Well :(

PLease let me make myself perfectly clear that only-ism of any version will not be tolerated on this forum. You have a right to any version you choose but please don't deny the same right to others.

Tape Maker, I see you didn't get the "tongue in cheek" part of my comment. There was no KJV when Jesus lived...as a matter of fact, the NT had not been written.
