Depending on whom you read the dark ages also called the Middle Ages lasted from late 400’s to 1000 – 1300 and persecution did reign through much of that time period via the Catholic Church’s control of state militias and also with the church’s enforcers who were somewhat like the Nazi SS division who were stamping out the heretics [sic].
Education was strictly limited to Catholic institutions and all ancient literature, from Plato, Socrates, Hippias, Gorgias etc were termed unfit for human consumption and were made subservient to the teachings of the “faith”. If a contradiction emerged it was simply swept under the rug of church dictate and forgotten.
It was during this time period that most of the false Catholic beliefs and practices came into being such as but not limited to infant Baptism, worshipping of relics, indulgences, transubstantiation, Holy Water, the sign of the cross over the heart, excommunication, Papal Bull, speaking Ex-cathedra etc.
Local NT churches still preached the gospel message in rural Europe regardless of the intense persecutions that arose from time to time. I read that there was nearly 700,000 Jews killed in the Spanish inquisition not counting several hundred thousand Ana-Baptists.
The contrast between the universal church and the local independent churches of the time is summed up in two words Christ verses paganism. When Charlemagne was crowned Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in 800 A.D. the Catholic Churches role in eschatology was sealed.
